.243 h4831sc for 100 grain bullets
« on: December 25, 2010, 08:53:14 AM »
Cant get anything to fly as well as standard winchester 100 grain power points. have been reloading with h4350 and imr 4064 and was wondering if h4831 would be a good choice as it is a slower powder. Any suggestions

My current load is 45gr of H4831sc with a Sierra 100 GR Prohunter, Fed. brass, CCI 200 primer. 2850fps out of my Rem. Mod 7 20" barrel and 1- 1 1/4" groups. My Rem 700 20" barrel shoots the same load @ 2760 into 3/4" groups. I also tried H4350, I got higher velocity, 2900, but the groups were usually 1 1/2+. I actually shot a few of my best groups with the H4350, but not as consistently as with the H4831sc

H4831/IMR 4831 or Win 780 would work well.

Due you guys feel this is a better choice then h4350 and imr4064 for 100 grain 243 bullets or should I try something else. as mentioned the factory win x ammo flies great.

see which gives a better group. A couple of ft/sec difference won't matter.

I first tried H4831SC in my 243 and 100 grain bullets but the accuracy was just mediocre, and then I tried IMR4350 and accuracy was stellar!  My rifle, a Ruger M77 All weather, liked them shoved against the rifling and  seemed to only like the flat based bullets for the 100 grain variety.

For my rifle, my brotherinlaw's rifle(s), my nephew's rifle and my son/grandson's rifle, H4831SC has been the best choice so far with H414 running a close second where 100gr bullets are concerned. most rifles are gonna have a preference to one powder/bullet combo. Our job is to find it.

Yep slow burning powders have always been stellar in the 243 Winchester to include IMR-4831, H-4831 and IMR-7828.

I have personally used R-19, IMR-4350, IMR-4831, and IMR-7828 and all good with any 100 grain bullet in my rifle, no matter the manufacturer for the 243 Winchester.

My standard is IMR-4350.

I use h4831 (not shortcut) in my 243 with 105 gr a-max. The group is usually within 1/2-3/4 of an in at 100yrds.

My standard is also IMR-4350.  I haven't shot much in .243 in several years.  I have a new 700 CDL in .243, but haven't shot it much and only with factory ammo.  So, I can't say what load it is going to like, but my old Classic was a tack driver with 41.5 gr of IMR-4350 under a Seirra 100 grain Pro-Hunter spitzer or semi-pointed (I wish they still  offered that bullet).

Winchester released Supreme 780 with wording to the effect that people would be able to use it to duplicate factory loadings of some Winchester ammo.  I believe the 100-grain 243 is such a load.  I only started work with 780 in my last 243 before selling the gun, but it showed promise.  If you don't like/want that, I had a great load with H1000 under 100-grainers, too.

any of the sugested powders work real well as would re19 and probably more so re17 although i havent tried 17 in the 243 yet. But bottom line is if i could have only one powder for 100s in the 243 or 6mm it would probably be 4350

DH,

I've used Accurate Arms 3100 for years in my 243, it and 4831 are about the same burn rate.  I'm using 40.0gr of 3100 and 80gr Speer Spitzer for my hunting load, killed many a WV whitetail with this load.  IMR and Hodgdon 4831 will be the same powder now with Hodgdon buying out IMR.

Even though Hodgdon owns both IMR-4831 and H-4831 they are two different powders and are not interchangeable.

Just got back from the range: use imr4350 and forget every thing else and  use any bullet you want . I've killed so much game with a .243 it doesn"t seem to matter what I use just try to keep weight to above 85 grains and put the bullet in the right place.

The only powder I use in my .243 in H414. I use it with barnes 85gr. x bullets, very accurate & deadly on deer.I'm getting a little over 3000 fps. out of a 20' barrel.

H414 and W760 are the same powder. I've had great luck with both powders and 76 gr bullet's my 243. Had a different one years ago and a 6mm Rem and didn't shoot anything that really turned men enough to remember the load. Them again I'm not a great 243 fan either. Shot some coyotes, gopher's and a few deer with it, that's it.

43g of H4831 sc and a Remington 100g psp flys out of my Savage at 2960 fps and drops them all into less than an inch at 100 yards.

43.5 grs of h4831sc with either 100gr. hornady btsp or sierra gamekings, my favorite load so far.
