35 whelen headspace workaround.
« on: August 24, 2011, 04:38:26 PM »
I have a fresh whelen to me barrel. I found several of the brass set deep in the chamber and some ftf. So I got one that is only a couple thousandths from flush and pushed extractor all the way in and put a dab of JB weld in notch of extractor for rim of cartridge so that it will psudo rim head space. This way even if a few shoulders are pushed too far back, it will go off and size case. don't think the headspace is off as cases I have that are fired and then fully sized sit right at flush. This would probably work for those who have older whelen barrels and seem to have headspace issue ftf's. Do wish I had put a bit of black dye in though as the gray stands out a little from the blueing. Has anyone else done this?
Thanks Don.

Yup, I've done it and it works, but others have done it and broken the extractor eventually, so it's probably not the best work around for a permanent fix.

I thought it was too simple and easy to not have been tried before. I assume the breakage was due to trying to close of some piece of grit in the 0 gap area.
Thanks Don.

I'm not sure exactly where it breaks, maybe Bobby will reply.
