accuracy issues with Remington 760
« on: August 16, 2011, 07:02:37 AM »
I have an old Remington 760 in 300 Savage caliber that is no longer grouping it's shots like it use too. I'm wondering if the barrel is in need of replacement or if something else is going on. The barrel is shiny and is not pitted. I have always shot handloads and in the past, thru trial and error, have been able to work up differant loads until I have been happy with the results. I've hunted with this gun for 25 years would really like to continue using it. I would appreciate your expert advice.

The 760 is usually pretty accurate rifle and the 300 Savage is not a barrel burner so perhaps there are other problems? With any Reminton (and others too) I check the crown first. It's the last place the barrel can affect the bullet and it's flight. A nick or ding can be quite setrimental. Also check the area just inside the bore under magnification for micro fractures. I've seen several rifles with these fractures (all Remington) and re-crowning to remove them improved the accuracy. Also the tube that the pump reciprocates on holds the barrel assembly in place. If it loosens it will badly damage accuracy.  As always I've assumed you've already checked the scope mounts and assured they are tight. the last place to check (or maybe the first?) is the scope itself. I've seen nearly all brands (I said nearly!) go bad at one point or another so check it out. A rough check can be done with a bore sighter using expansion type bore spuds. With the bore sighter locked in the muzzle not the cross hair alighnment and carefully turn the rifle over. A scope that moves very much will negatively affect accuracy. Good luck and keep us informed as to your findings.

Very sound advice Gunnut ! The barrel tightness is the first thing that I check , I've seen old ones come loose and I've seen brand new 7600s with a loose barrel from the factory ! I have a 760 in .300 that is a very nice gun to shoot and carry !
