7mm bullets in a tcu for javelina
« on: January 02, 2004, 06:09:41 AM »
I drew a Arizona Javelina tag for a hunt this feb. I have a 7mm tcu 10", that I am going to use. I'm looking for some adivce on some bullets. I'm hopeing to be able use bullets in the 100 to 120 grain range. is there any bullets out there that will expand reliably at 2100 fps, with out blowing up. Or, do I need to look at a heavier bullet at a slower speed. Your thoughts please.

Javelina Killing

I will be interested to see what responses you get because I am in the process of buying a & TCU barrel for short range southern deer. I have shot several Javelina with other things from 22LR to 357 Herrett and bow and arrow . I have found them relatively easyto kill with a pistol . The 22 shot was stalked to about 20 yards and placed between the eye and the ear and dropped it in it's tracks .The 357 , revolver, with the cast Keith HP at 1350 did equal in results through the ribs . The 30 and 357 Herrett were very effective on them. The Javelinas in south Texas hardly ever weigh more than 50#'s so almost any expanding bullet from the 7 TCU should drop them on the spot with a chest shot in the vitals. Good luck and yes you can eat them just have to slow cook them or they tend to be a little like eating the sole off your shoe, and beware of the scent glan when you clean them.

Javelina's in my limited experience with them, kill easily.  Either one of the weights mentioned depending on contruction should work fine.

Sierra 130 SSSP, the only bullet I use in the 7 TCU or 7-30.

Mr. GB hoped you would chip in on this discussion . Have you shot southern white tails with this 130 SSP in a 7 TCU ? Tell me about it and your loads . I know you are not responsible for anything I do with reloads . I had a 7 & a 6.5 in the past and they were fond of H322 . Have you used the H322 loads ? have you chrono your 7 TCU loads ? New project just interested.

Yup I've shot a few southern white tails with the 10" 7 TCU using the Sierra 130 SSP. Does a fine job. My favorite load using the Sierra bullet is 26.0 to 27.0 grains of AA2230. This is the powder I generally use in the 7 TCU. Velocity is about 1850-1900 fps with the above loads in my barrel. This has proven adequate for deer inside of 100 yards with my barrel. Haven't tried it further.

Thank you I'll try you load next fall and a little target work between now and then . I read your line on the 120 V-max bullets and wondered if they would work for short range varmit bullets out of the 7 ?

120 grn. Nosler

I have no doubts about the 130 grn. SSP, but can't find them???  I shot a deer the other day with a 120 grn. Nosler BT, worked great!!!  I am shooting 26 grns. of H322 out of a 14" barrel.  We don't have a chrono so I don't know the velocity.
