French doors for a manufactured home
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:28:11 AM »
Situtation - I have an oak bar I bought in Germany that will not fit through any door on my house.  I have a sliding door that I would like to replace with a French door so that I can get my furniture in (and out when I sell) the house.  I've looked at Lowe's and Home Depot and have found some nice one's that we like for about $500 or so.  When we bought our place, we replaced the locks and deadbolts on the swinging doors and had to go to a mobile home supply store to get them since Lowe's and HD don't sell that size.  The guy at the mobile home supply store told me that I couldn't use French doors for a regular house in my manufactured home.  Of course his doors were $200-$300 more than the ones at Lowe's/HD.  The question is... does anyone know WHY I can't or if I CAN?  Is this guy blowing smoke up my butt to make a profit or is he telling the truth or what?  I'm hoping some of you guys with construction experience can help me out.

as a rule the mobile home guy is correct.  Mobile home doors are (usually) shorter and have thinner profiles when compared with stick built homes.  However, there are always exceptions.  The wife and I bought 12 acres, and ordered a modular home (double wide)  and spec'd it out as a retirement / permenant dwelling.  Our swinging doors are 78" tall x 36" wide, the slider is 76" tall and 74" wide.  These can be replaced with standard house doors at anytime (though we'd either need to order them or fill in for the narrower house door Lowes typically sells).  Single wide or older double wide mobile homes use flange mount doors instead of "cased inside the wall" type doors found with standard construction houses.  You can buy a door and re-cut the opening and build in a case for the door you want, but the costs of doing that will exceed what the mobile home parts guy wants for his drop in door.
