22lr??
« on: February 11, 2004, 02:08:05 PM »
Need some suggestions from those more experienced than I...
What 22lr pistol should I look for to use as an all around plinker/small game gun--Think I'd like a revolver, but not 100% sold on the idea...

Thanks

Dave

Ruger MKII or a Browning Buckmark. Probably the best two semi autos out there.   KN

lubbockdave:

From my point of view, if you're looking for a durable gun to roll tin cans or bust clods, and you're okay with a semi-auto...go for a "no-frills" Ruger MkII.  They're hard to beat.  If it's a revolver you're really interesed in...Ruger and S&W have some neat guns.  Spend some time in a gun shop and see which one fits you best.

Good luck with your search...let us know what you end up with and how you like it!

Good Luck and Be Safe!  ...Chris :D

My choices would be as follows:
1) Colt Diamondback - no longer in production, still available but getting harder to find. Expensive
2) S&W model 18 - no longer in production but still available - still can be had at a reasonable price
3) S&W model 17 - only if the model 18 isn't available
4) Colt trooper - because I once had one in .357 and was able to perform my own action job which was awesome. (Pure luck - I'm sure)
5) Tie between S&W model 617 and the taurus (not sure of the model number) I have not had a chance to handle or shoot the Taurus but if they are half as nice as I have read the Taurus would get the nod.

You may have noticed that I don't think highly of any current production .22 revolvers. Just my opinion.

I currently have a Ruger MarkII Slabside which I really like.  Unfortunately it is not legal  in my State to hunt with.... So  I just picked up a Taurus Tracker in .17 HMR to fit the (squirrel) hunting bill.  The Tracker .22 would be a nice gun for the money as well.  Don't have experience with any others.

S&W 617 with 6 shot cylinder and 6 inch barrel. Great gun.
