New squirrel rig
« on: December 24, 2003, 08:31:38 AM »
I got a squirrel hunting rig today. I bought a friend's Ruger MKII Slabside Target model with a dot sight. When I started wearing glasses I stopped hunting with my MKII bull barrel. I just can't get a good sight picture with the glasses on.
Happy Holidays to all.  :D  Dave

Dave:  I have the one you gave up, the MkII with the bull bbl - they call that the Government Model - dang thing is more accurate than i am and was so right out of the box.  Still have the original target that came with it.  It has busted many squirrel, rabbit, woodchuck and chipmunk, but no moose yet.  A buddy was so impressed with it we had to find him one with the shorter bull bbl, and we both really enjoy ours.  Good fer ya!  May many squirrel come your way.  Mikey.

Yes, they are accurate.  That's the model I have.  When I realized it was that accurate, I quit carrying the rifle coonhunting and started toting the pistol.  It was a whole lot easier to carry than the rifle at night - especially through the briars and rough places.

I use my Single Six but just got a Slabside. Can't wait to try it out. Next stop a reddot for it.

I know some folks don't like stainless but in Oregon it's a must if ya want to get out and shoot in the winter and not worry about rust IMHO.

I am really getting into rabbit hunting, and my new rig is a Sig Trailside with a red dot.  I was so impressed with how it shot at the range, and seriously ready to start packing it in the woods.

I gave the new .22 a good cleaning, removed the front sight and put a filler screw in the hole. My son took my 5.5" bull barrel MKII back to NC with him. I did swap the grips and kept the Pachmyer grips I had on my old pistol. I didn't like the thumb rest on the factory grips. I ran out of time to run to the range today and sight it in. BTW the previous owner used it to squirrel and rabbit hunt. He liked how easy it was to carry instead of a shotgun for rabbits.

I've had my Ruger Slabside with open sights for 3 years.  I can't count the squirrels that have fallen to this precision weapon.  My 10 year old daughter loves to hunt with it too.  After my Dad shot it he bought a Mark II Blue Bull barrel.  That shoots almost as well as my Slabside.  This is the best 22 I've ever shot and would recommend it to anyone who loves to hunt small game or plink.

I have a Ruger Gov Modle Slabside with Millet Red dot.

I have a Volquartzen accurizing kit in it, and it shoots darn nice!  Best score in a Bullseye rapid fire is a 99,  it is the gun not me.

Enjoy your gun, everybody that has one does.

I have the slab sided bull ball one myself and love it.  Scarry accurate and a great plinker.I just wish NJ would allow handgun hunting here but no luck.  Have fun and go get them.

Guys-

Interesting thread.  I am waiting on my pistol permit, and when it arrives plan to purchase a Ruger MkII (in addition to a Super Blackhawk Hunter).

I'd like a mid-length stainless gun, accurate, and will probably buy new. What exact model do you folks recommend?

Thanks - Mawgie

i like the 22/45 grip shape! i slid on a hogue rubber grip sleeve, and you talk about a good feeling grip.  mines the 5 1/2" bull, but you can get it with the slabside barrel also.

Mawgie, if you plan on using a scope or dot sight a Target model is for you since they are drilled nd tapped and come with a scope ring base. I really like the 5 1/2" bull barrel my son now has. When my eyes went south I couldn't focus on the front sight with my glasses on. I can still shoot open sights with no eye correction but then it makes hunting harder without them. I really like the Pachmeyer rubber grips. I have had positive comments on them by almost everyone that has handled or shot my pistol.

I'm another Trailside owner and have been using it on squirrels and cottontails.  I enjoy the challenge as well as the ease of carry -- sometimes exploring is my primary objective and harvesting small game is a secondary (and opportunistic) objective.

I have the Slabside competition model but haven't had a chance to really use it much.  Had it about a year and probably haven't put 150 rounds through it.  have a 4x silver Leupold handgun scope that I've been thinking of mounting in the rings just for fun.  Like to play around with it every now and then though.  Will probably try and use it a little more next year. How accurate?
« Reply #15 on: January 13, 2004, 04:12:01 AM »
I got the Ruger MK512 last week. This is the version with a 5 1/2" bull barrel. Off a (knee) rest at 25 yards groups were about 3 inches, with frequent flyers expanding them even more.  This was using the Winchester bulk hollow point packs from Wal-mart. I've got some Eley Tenex on order and just picked up some CCI Green Tag, but haven't made it back to the range yet.  What can I expect from this gun? So far I'm disappointed, I hope its initial showing was due to poor ammo.

I never tried to group mine but I've bagged several squirrels with it. I have a stainless 51/2 bull barrel too. My son took it back to NC with him after I got the Target model. I did paint the face of the sight blade orange to get a better sight picture when hunting with it. When I shoot from the bench I used a rolled piece of carpet for a rest and placed it under my wrists. You could try that for better accuracy. Dave

Started work on my Slabside. Should made a fine addition to my rimfire squirrel arsenal.

Nice looking set-up bang.  Is that the rimfire version or the standard version of the tasco reddot?

Why would one choose one over the other?

Standard. Because i put a standard size scope rail on the gun so I could upgrade easier in the future. As my eyes get worse I my want to put a 2x pistol scope on it or just a better red dot.
