There are more greases, lubes, tapes, etc., touted as "great breech plug lube" than Carter had liver pills. What works really well for you?

Pink teflon with a touch of good grease on the forward threads works almost every time.  Elbow grease takes care of the rest.

I use Knights Breech Plug Grease and Bostick Never-Seez on everything but the Austin and Halleck.  The Austin and Halleck seems to do better with Gorilla Grease.

Nothing. If you shoot a lot, especially heavy loads the best I can hope for is an easy wrench removal of the plug. Tape and/or lube, its all the same for me. But go with out some anti-sieze and the alternative sucks!

I see a lot of posts on 777 sticking the breach plugs.  I have only used 777 in a Knight Disc rifle.  I use both Knight grease and the grease T/C sells.  My plug is always easy to remove but I have only fired a max of around 35 shots in a day with it.  I clean the plug/rifle threads good and put grease in the threads completely.  Then install the plug finger tight and back it out around 1/8 to 1/16 turn.  After shooting, I slide the round remover into the action and the plug comes out almost as easy as it went in.

I did watch a ML video a while back how to start with a ML.  They guy put a little grease on the plug in one spot and said you didn't have to spread it.  I wonder if things like this are what are causing tthe plugs to stick.  I may just have a perfet fitting plug.

You may, I thought the same but by the time I get around 4 or 500 shots through the gun, any of them, it gets beyound finger removal.

I do as UC does with one exception... I use yellow teflon, it is thicker. It is designated for gaslines.

:-) One of the best breech plug lubes I have ever used has been a product called "The Stik" from a company known as Sports Care Products.  This is a nickel anti-sieze that comes in stick form, like a great big Chapstick.  It is clean and easy to use.  I shoot two or three times weekly, taking 3 or 4 rifles with me each time...and last year that added up to around 8,000 rounds.  In all that shooting, I have not had one sticking incident with "The Stik".

Sports Care Products is out of Aurora, OH...their phone number is 888 428-8840.

This stuff looks promising, though it is the same Mil-Spec 907E stuff I have been using out of a can.

The best tip, one that I should practice FAR more often than I actually do, is to just crack the breechplug open at the range after the first 8-10 shots, then retighten. With Triple 7, it breaks the hard sugar "bond-line," and makes a big difference at the end of the day.

:-) Randy,

That's a good tip.

With powders like black powder, Pyrodex or Triple Seven, the longer a rifle is left uncleaned the harder it is to break loose a fouled breech plug.  Even if a shooter plans to jump right into cleaning an in-line muzzleloader as soon as he gets home from the range (or from a successful hunt), the minute or two it takes to break that breech plug loose as soon as the shooting is done is the best couple of minutes a shooter will ever invest in keeping the removeable breech plug of an in-line "removeable".

Ive been using just a little tc plug grease on the first couple of threads and a good dose of clp on the rest of the plug with 777,make it barely finger tight and it comes out after shooting just about as easy as it went in.Works for me.

It seems to me a lot of us follow the practice of backing the plug off a bit from just snug.  I'm going to start leaving mine snug to see if that isn't part of the problem.  A lot of these breech plugs are designed to make a seal on the forward surfaces in one way or another.  T/C in particular touts the "shoulder sealing design" yet I've never really given that design a chance since I've backed them off a bit for so long I can't remember why.

I am having good luck with cheap Teflon tape from Home depot and Permatex spark plug grease from the auto parts store. The grease is messy but works pretty good.

There's a new one that I've not tried-- is it copper, zinc, or ???? based?

The Permatex grease is silver in color, so I am guessing zinc? Also, if I remember correctly the packaging said it was good to 2000 F.

I have tried Gorrila grease and the tape and neither worked to my satisfaction. Lately I have been using the Militech Grease and told them to market it as a black powder breech plug lube it has worked better than any thing else I have tried so far using 777. This stuff is not perfect but does loosen with just a tap on the wrench and then turn it out. That is 80% better luck than I ever had with the gorilla grease and the tape did not work for me at all.  My inline at the moment is a NEF Huntsman. I am making a inline using some barrels I bought for the Knight 86 I could not pass up the deal at 30 bucks a pop for a Green Mountain 54 cal barrel and a 12 guage barrel. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I also use Miltec.  I use the oil on everything on my guns and the rease on my breech plug.  Comes out much easier since I "cooked" the oil on the threads then apply the grease, compared to using "anti-seize" lubes.

Breech Plug Grease??
« Reply #20 on: December 22, 2003, 07:05:24 AM »
Ok, here is one for the debate. I have used TC bullet lube, you know the brown gooey crap you use to put on conicals on in-lines since 1992 and have never had a breech plug stick or give any trouble in cleaning. If it can hold up to lubing a barrel under ignition conditions then it has properties that will allow it to hold up in the threads of a breech plug. I have used it on 4 different in-lines, Knights and TC's without any trouble what so ever. Stuff is cheap as dirt and works. Cleans off breech plug threads with hot soapy water easily. I even use it on nipple threads on my Hawkins with same success. I think the key is for breeech plug to be snug and you clean it immediately when you get home. I use 777 150 gr. pellets this past season and still no trouble removing plug from my Encore. Just what I use that works for me.

I use the Militec grease also. No problems whatsoever. 5 or 50 shots, comes out as easy as it went in.

Per Tcallbuilder at H&R Talk Forums, "first let me add this disclaimer (use at your own risk)
all i have used on my in-line breech plugs is vasline petroleum jelly....been useing the stuff for at least 10 years in several different mz rifles (including the huntsman) and have never had a breech plug seize.

if you hunt game (like deer) who's first line of defence is its nose...then the stuff is almost oderless....can be found in any medicine cabnet in America....and you can buy a 10 year supply for a dollar.

it also makes a great shotgun choke lube."

I'm gonna try it.

The notion that a deer will ignore your Pyro "P" fouled barrel, and your own special (likely delightful aroma) only to sniff the lube on your breech plug threads doesn't not smell right to me, UC. I'll vote for up in the air, or wind in your face, perhaps due to my own peculiar fragrance.

Me neither, Randy, but that wasn't the point really.  Vaseline is pretty cheap, you can get it anywhere, and has MULTIPLE uses.  I have a jar in the garage now so it's just a matter of remembering to try it.

Stuck In-Line Breech plug
« Reply #26 on: September 15, 2011, 06:06:04 PM »
Got a new Remington “Genesis” two deer seasons ago (2009). Didn’t know it was a Traditions import with “Remington” stamped on it. Last season it developed problems. My Breech plug was stuck so bad I had to send it back to the factory to get it out. Soaked it for weeks in Brake Free and Marvel Mystery Oil with no results.  Didn’t  connect the stuck plug with the use of Triple Seven. Pyrodex didn’t seem to cause any problems. Now it’s fixed I’m afraid to use it.  I “Googled” “Best breech plug lube” and found this site.

Just wanted to thank you all for the tips you posted, even though they were back from 2003. I’ll try the finger-tight tip along with removing the plug immediately after shooting. Will also use some of that Teflon tape

Thanks again.. Happy shooting.

For what it's worth, I also use Permatex spark plug Anti-Seize lubricant from the auto supply store.  You just have to be careful when applying it that you don't get it on the face of the breech plug, other wise it affects the ignition of the powder.

I use Super Lube, but lately have been experimenting with teflon tape.  Started using Super Lube years ago on waterjet threads per the manufacturer's rec.  It carried over to the MZ a few years back.  It is an extreme high pressure synthetic with PTFE.  It's available from Fastenal and MSC Direct as well as others.  Good success with the tape the first 2 times, and not missing cleaning out the grease from the threads.  I'll continue with the tape until I experience a problem.  Also, I think the T/C Super Lube is the same thing in a smaller tube and of course the T/C flavored tube (and mark-up).
