Eye relief needed to mount scope forward of hammer
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:38:28 AM »
I'm considering buying an Ultra Light Slug Hunter in 20 gauge.  I have a Sightron 4X32 with 4.8" of eye relief.

Can I mount this scope ahead of the hammer? What make/height rings would you recommend?

Welcome! At almost 9¾" long, the scope will likely require a longer mount to be ahead of the hammer, the Weaver #82 will probably work with medium, possibly low rings, you may have to cut a new cross slot, Burris Zee steel rings are pretty good rings and probably my favorite.  ;)

Thanks for the replies.

Quick, what would you guess is needed, for an average min. eye relief, for forward of the hammer mounting?

Jason, what rail and scope are you using?

I've only used a couple scopes mounted ahead of the hammer, both had 5" of eye relief, the Sightron should work at 4.8" if the scope itself isn't too long, both of my scopes were  only ~8" long.

Jason or Tim,

Could one of you post a photo of that setup?  I'm trying to decide what to do with my .308 barrel  - get a ramp front sight and peep rear installed, or mount a scope.

Thanks!

All it has to do is clear forward of the hammer by a smidge plus a little (just to be sure) , and if you lose a tad of the field of view by being just a bit too far forward you probably wont notice it UNLESS you crowd up thinking you gotta see the edges of the circle (I aim with the middle  ;) ). As to ring height, it usually is better to keep it as low as you can so you can have the 'proper' cheek weld on the stock, but some people have physical issues that make them use taller.

Iowaforge,

I'm trying essentially the exact same setup: Sightron 4x32 on a USH 20 gauge, just not the Light version.  I'm going to put it together with Warne Maxima QD Low rings (0.25") and see how it does.  I'll let you know after this weekend.

Iowaforge,

I could not get the Sightron to mount forward of the hammer with the Warne low rings.  I think it would work with a longer mount as Quickdtoo suggested.  Instead I ended up grinding down the hammer spur and top of the hammer with a Dremel until it cleared the scope, as has been suggested by many on this forum, and started by Quickdtoo (I think).  I then treated the naked steel with Birchwood Casey cold blue.  I could have used the Warne medium rings (0.375"), but for me the scope needed to be lower for a better cheek weld.
