Your thoughts on a Mossberg Silver Reserve 20 guage?
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:39:18 AM »
I just put a Silver Reserve, 20 guage, used on layaway.  I sold a Winchester Model 25 in 20 guage which I loved.  Times were tough and I needed the $$.
I would love to hear everyones thoughts and experiences on this shot gun.  It seems like a good value.
Thanks,
Dana

I have often wondered the same.  They are pretty guns but I have never spoken to anyone who has ever owned one.  That might be very telling though.  There might be a reason none of my friends own one.

Good looking guns and feel nice in hand. I've held them and figured they'd be a nice low cost O/U. I talked a friend into getting one based merely on having seen them in the shop.

His doubled on nearly every shot. He took it back and got a Huglu imported by CZ and has been happy with it ever since.

I've seen several other reports of such problems and can't say that I've ever seen a positive report on them. I have no personal experience with them and likely never will have.

Are you saying you would rather hang one on a wall then shoot one?  Interesting thoughts Graybeard.

I have a 20 gauge I bought about 4 years ago.  Use it for grouse hunting so don't shoot that many rounds thru it each year.

I've had no problems with mine so far and it's never doubled.  I've read of some bad experiences other owners have had - most (if not all) involved doubling.  Perhaps you either get a good one or you get a bad one??

Although I can't complain about mine, if I had it to do over I think I'd save up a few more dollars and go with one of the CZ models.

Go over to ShotgunWorld. Either do a search on the Silver Reserve or skip down to the Mossberg section for a lot of info pertaining to them.
I'll warn ya now...most of the info ain't good!

I agree.  The boys on Shotgun World don't seem to like any double unless it is a Browning, Berretta, or some other high end gun.  I have verified that quite a few firing pins broke on the Silver Reserve.  They were replaced and that was that for the most part.  I have also heard from guys who shoot skeet and put a couple of thousand rounds through them with no problem.
Hopefully I will have one of those.  Also a 20 guage is not as hard on metal as a 12.

There is a whole page on the shotgun world forum for Yildiz O/Us.  I'm planning on buying one, just can't decide on a 20 or a 12.  Academy Sports is importer for this Turkish brand and they sell for $399.   Huglu (CZs) and the Mossbergs are also Turkish if I remeber correctly.
