Availability of Stainless barrels
« on: August 24, 2011, 02:48:53 PM »
I would like to purchase stainless 7mm-08 and .223 barrels to add to the 45-70 barrel on my stainless ultra hunter but it looks as if you can no longer puchase stainless barrels through the H&R barrel program, is this correct?  I do see stainless barrels for sale on this forum but I do not have the skill nor inclination to fit one to my stainless sb2 receiver.  Is my only alternative using a a gunsmith to stub a stainless barrel on to a doner barrel that I would purchase through the H&R barrel program?  Also, would I see an increase in potential accuracy over a standard H&R factory barrel?  I guess on the flip side, blued barrels would not look that bad on the stainless receiver and would certainly be cheaper then the stub process if I was staying with a standard caliber.

As with all accessory barrels, availability can vary, they had all of these SS rifle barrels in stock in January which is the last time I checked, call and ask, (866)776-9292. Be aware the only stainless frame they've ever made comes on the 444 and 45-70 Ultra Hunters which wasn't available until 2008, all other bright frames are matte nickel.

Robert,
The gunsmith you intend to use can normally fit barrels. Also, Duracoat is available (from reputable coaters) in a variety of colors including stainless steel. Don't ask me to tell the difference between that has been coated and one that is really stainless steel, cuz I can't. ;)  I have yet to see where a stub didn't shoot better than the factory barrel.

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks for the replies.  Tim, I did call H&R on Friday and they ladies (I called twice just to make sure) both stated they did not have any stainless barrels in the program right now and did not antcipate having any in the future.

PM Brian56, he'll know if they do or not, sometimes CS just doesn't know.

Thanks Tim, I cannot seem to find his profile.  Is there a profile search feature I am missing?

You can select "Members" in the top toolbar and search there. ;)  Also, if you type in the members name on the PM address line, it will auto-populate. Just make sure it's spelled right.

Some barrel just fit fine, not all 'require' fitting skills, so you could probably have a 50/50 chance of buying barrel(s) that would pop right on. If it doesnt want to quite close up I would prefer fitting that over shimming one that is too loose, and it doesnt take much in terms of thousandths of an inch.
So, dont entirely give up on the idea of picking up barrels here; and blue would look good too, as you say.
