Added to my stable of Handi's
« on: September 14, 2011, 12:58:19 PM »
I just picked up a H&R Shikari .44 mag bored out to .445 SM, real good condition including the cleaning rod, now I just need to find some good loads so I can take it out and try it, I'll add some pictures when I get the chance.

I surely hope that is built on a SB2 frame!!!!!!

IIRC the Shikari is not; I think I would use a full case of Trail Boss as my heavy load and just enjoy it without trying to magnumize it.

That is correct, orig shikari rifles are NOT SB2 receivers. I was hoping that it had one for safety's sake...

Thanks for the heads up, haven't had a chance to really inspect it, that's probably why it was $180, maybe I'll just stick with putting .44 mag thru it like it was designed, or like it was said, keep the loads soft.

I would have bought it for that too, and have no problem with keeping the loads sane, regardless of the chambering. It might be the previous owner wanted more case capacity, not for high intensity smokeless, but softer, bulky smokeless like Trail Boss or even black powder. Im sure you can find a load it likes and not overpressure it at all. Sounds like fun..... ;D .

I don't know and maybe some of the handi-gurus can chime in but I'm thinking I could also put this barrel on one of my SB2 frames and pick up a .357 barrel for the SB1, whata ya'll think, doable?

Probably not a good idea either, the vintage barrel has a soldered or brazed underlug, instead of welded like modern barrels.

There's a second handi in .500 S&W that I've got my eye on, that might have to be my blaster  ;D

You can always shoot less than full pressure loads in it, just keep the loads in the 44 mag pressure level best you can, ~40kcup.
