Savage 219

          I have a chance to buy a 219 that's about 85% condition . This 219 has two barrels 30-30 Win.  and 20 Ga.  . Could any Savage expert give me an idea of the value of this gun ?  I remember these things from when I was a kid back in the early sixties . Thank for the help !

oldsap--I'm no expert (there's one for sale on gunbroker that's  a 30-30 only he's asking 319 for a gun in less good shape) but the 219 is a less $$ version of the savage 24 combo--I'd say if you can buy it for 250 go ahead--it's a nice truck gun
also I just checked e-gunparts.com  20 ga barrels are still avalable and list around 70-100 and 30-30 (sold out ) around 90

There is a great web site for savage firearms questions....savageshooters.com.  They have an expert there named Mad Dog who has researched and collected Savage 219/220 combos and could answer all of your questions.  I have 2 Savage 219's....one a combo 30-30 with a 20 ga spare forearm and barrel and one 30-30 with a grooved receiver for scope mounting.  I am going to sell the grooved receiver model with an extra stock, but I use the other gun every fall and it works great and is surprisingly accurate.  They were good guns that would sell well if marketed today.

Savage 219 ISN'T any version of the Savage M24 combo gun, although they do share a few parts.  It is a rifle version of the hammerless single shot shotgun Model 220.  Whole different critter.  Nice critter.  (So is the 24).

About $300, +/-, in 85% condition.
 
Make sure the firing pin tip isn't broken at that pricepoint - if it is, Numrich usually has them.

Just FYI, DON'T "dry fire" Savage breakopen single shots of any variety; the firing pins break easily if you do, and many used ones have broken pins.  Replacement pins are fairly easy to find but a pain to replace, especially the ones held in with a crosspin.

If you get a 220, 219, or a Stevens 94, buy a snap cap for it.  Much cheaper than replacing the firing pin.  (DON'T ask me how I learned this.....)
