Thundermug as a shooter
« on: September 26, 2011, 12:22:28 PM »
I recently purchased a thundermug from Dom and I asked him to make me a base so I could use the mug as a shooter as well as a noise maker.
Here is the results. Great work, Dom!

Looks good, but you are limited on elevation...... I guess you could use wedges under the front end.....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

The metal base will be bolted to a wood base with an elevation adjustment.

I find it impossible to ignore that "thunder mugs" approximate interchangeable chambers for early breechloading cannon beginning in the 1400s.

Funny you should mention that, I am working on a "Proof of concept" piece right now that will have interchangable 1.5"x3.5" chambers bored out for .50 cal.

I sometimes shoot my thunder mugs like a mortar by sitting them on top of a wedge shaped wooden base.  I'm not really trying for distance or accuracy as long as I can drop them in the lake and see the splash.

flagman1776,
I'm not sure that I understand exactly what point it is that you're trying to make; are you just stating that the concept of thunder mugs was originally inspired by the detachable chambers of early breech loading cannon?

I think he may be making more of an observation than a point - one along the lines of maybe making a thunder mug/breechblock cannon combo.

Or said the same but differently...make a cannon with a removable breech block.  And using the removable breech as a thunder mug.

I thought that's what you meant, I just wanted to make sure. For what it's worth, I'm in total agreement with your observations. I also think that the majority of knowledgeable people who've written about this aspect of historic artillery, recognized a direct line of evolution from the removable chambers of early breech loaders to the dedicated "thunder mug."

I originally asked Dom to make the base so the mug would be at 45 degrees for use as a mortar but changed my mind and had him make it so the barrel was horizontal.

Dom made me a "Short" Thundermug, using my material....I shoot it like a Mortar, too...but would make a great Breech for a nice "Swivel Gun" style, too. I made a 45 degree base for it, and it's a golf ball shooter. Boomlover
