What got him?

What do you think happened to him? I think he may have been the target of a slimeball poacher. He is likely to be full of infection by hunting season,not that I would eat him but I won't let a deer suffer either if I can do something about it.

Another 2 months until season- you might not even notice by November! Some sort of puncture wound there for sure- do you have much poacher activity ?

Look for a large snare or barb wire trap, but be carefull. Looks like barb wire marks on the neck to shoulder area.
Certainly, if you see the deer afield, put it out of its misery.
Poachers in my area are reportedly using a crossbow. I have found their tracks (boots) on one of my trails on my property.
Bet that wound on the neck is arrow related.

Could be,this is the first year crossbows are allowed here in ny so people are buying them. I know of one place that has sold alot of cheap ones (not knowing anything about them)and they'll be in the woods with them this year or already there thinking they have a silent gun.
