Never shot a hog with buck, but I have a deer.  If you don't make a precise shot and kill the animal, you will get little or no blood trail from round buck.  I've never hunted anything with buck again, even though I have a defense shotgun loaded with it at home........

IMO I'd rather have a 357 or 44 pistol.

I've seen deer shot with buck that looked like they were spouting blood . It all depends on the shot placement and size of the shot . 000 seldom stays in the critter and deforms ( gets flat )and leaves nice wound channels .

When night hunting hogs I carry a 12 ga/30-06 combo gun and a 44 mag.  I currently use 180gr .30-06 Norma Oryx and and 3 inch 00 buck.  The .30-06 is my primary round with the 00 buck as backup.

On smaller hogs 80lbs or less at ranges less that 40 yards the buck shot works great.  On larger hogs at ranges of less than 40 yards the buckshot will do enough damage to immobilize them for the dispatch shot with the 44 mag.

I personally feel 00 buck from a helicopter is irresponsible.

Buckshot works fine on deer and hogs if used as it was intended. Up close and personal. Personally I say 25 yards is my max.

Several WMA's and Corps properties around my area allow only #2 shot and nothing bigger. Regular #2 shot is hard to find also. I could see it being useful at less than 15 yards with proper placement and a tight choke.

I got to go out last night with a friend.  He took an AK, so I carried my 12ga with reduced recoil 00 Buck.  It's what I keep in it for home defense.  We spotted a couple of big sows and chased them into the brush.  After a few minutes, I heard them on our left and they bolted.  I fired on the first one, about 50 yds away, and she didn't even slow down.  The second one was about 30yds away, and I did what I normally do and aimed for the head/neck.  I was quickly reminded that buck doesn't fly as fast as a 55gr out of a .223.  I hit her hind quarters and she was down.  Finished her wth the pistol.  Later we chased down a boar in an open field and while shooting (and missing) out of the window of the truck, my buddy ran me through a mesquite tree. . .thankfully the mirror caught the brunt of it.  Later we came on another sow with some little ones and 25yd head shot put her down quite quickly.  Overall, I thought the 00 Buck I was using performed quite well.  It is certainly limited on range.  But up in the brush and out to about 35yds, I think it'll do a pretty good job.  But again, shot placement is still more important than what is coming out of the end of the barrel.

Pick your shots, Grandson killed a 80 pound sow with 2 loads of 3" #4s at 50 feet. Second shot droped her on the spot. Have seen some killed with 22 lr. A well placed shot will trump a sorry shot from a large caliber any time. My favorite buck is #1 .

I would not use buckshot on anything but a home invader. A long time ago I wounded so many animals with buckshot. If you have to use it make sure you are within 25 yards or less or you will loose it. There are some types of buckshot that produce 1300 ft. per second. But I would still use a rifled barrel shotgun with a scope and high tech slugs. Remember, the heart of a hog is not just behind the front shoulder like a deer but behind the front shoulder blade. Unless you take a neck shot. GOOD LUCK

I have read in a few places that 00 or 000 buck is the preferred defense round for loggers and power line crews in Alaska anf the Northwest woods for big bears.  Also I know a guy who says that is what is used by maintenance crews on some reclaimed land in Texas that is thick with hogs, and he says they sit atop the machinery with a 12 gauge and a 5 gallon bucket of shells and blast away.  So I don't doubt the adequacy of 00 or 000 Buck within range, and to me that is maybe 20 yards.  Good for hunting in the heavy brush.  Try a Browning A-5 with a short barrel and no plug for 5 fast shots!

Personally I would not take it past 10 ft. Deer sure but not hogs. I have used it on a deer and it was amazing.  On hogs...... not so much.

I will check out the 0000 but to be honest I have seen 000 go thru. deer at over 60 yards , in one case from the back of the neck thru the lower jaw . Most give buck a bad rap because they don't have or have never seen a gun that shoots it well. I don't fault these guys , why worry with buck if you can hunt with slugs or a rifle ? no reason to really. BUT and its a big but , if you hunt where its the only option you will spenf time and fortune to ectend both range and power. In both cases the ansewer is tighten up the pattern !

As far as Alaska fish & game using 00 or 000 buck for big bears that's a load of baloney. Some officers use shotguns but with slugs only. The F&G issues shotguns and 375h&h rifles for their officers.  ::) for arresting human violators they Carry AR15s or the full auto variety.

In the words of Jeff Cooper, buckshot 25 yards slugs 100 yards max. You can have special shotguns built that will do better than that but not by much. I once took a new Remington 870 to my gunsmith & told him I wanted a dedicated buckshot gun made out of it. He cut the barrel to 23" and installed a true-choke imp. Modified choke in it. It would pattern 00 at 50 yards about like most will at 25 yards.

As far as the tri-ball loads James in yankeetown fla. Has developed some good loads but you still have the basic platform to use. I mean it is a shotgun after all. If you want more range buy a rifle. JMO

Pastop , some locations are shotgun only and still some are buckshot only , its not about buying what one wants alot of the time its about getting the most out of what you are restricted to.

If that's the law then you will need to abide by that but I know in Alaska it's not. I've hunted from fla to Maine, the rocky mountain states, and Alaska and rifles have been legal everywhere I've hunted. But then I've not hunted in Texas, just spent a lot of time driving through to get to good hunting.  ;D

East of the Blue Ridge in Va. many counties restrict rifle and slug use. Some allow rifles if elevated above the ground .

The State of Texas has a rabies program called ORVP. You can research the program if you like. There are rabies vaccine filled baits that look like square biscuits that are dropped from airplanes over thousands of square miles, mostly along the Mexican border. Two months after the bait drop, the State goes into selected areas and will hunt the ranches for coyotes and hogs. Some are killed with rifles by the States trappers but most are killed via helicopter and a Benelli 12 ga shotgun sporting an improved cylinder choke. Shooting ranges are 20-25 yds. The State requires a #4 buckshot with copper plated pellets. Most hogs are dead when they hit the ground. The field personnel then go find the animal via GPS and cut the rostrum off to be sent to Texas A&M for analysis. The vaccine leaves a dark ring on the teeth and the researchers can tell how many and when the animal received the bait. But it doesn't take all that much of a shotgun or shot to kill hogs providing you are aware of the ranges that it is effective.
The State also issues sabotted slugs for those trappers with limited range of not over 100 yards to be shot out of rifled barrels. They are pretty effective and accurate out of a rifled barrel. I've shot groups of under 2" at 100 yds with a stock, out of the box, Remington 870 rifled shotgun. That's more than enough accuracy to kill a hog at that range. There's more than enough power there considering the 438gr bullet is moving at 1700'ps averagely which is about the same as a 45-70.

Buckshot from above is a whole different animal than from the side. Spine will not be 1" under the skin, but viatals are much deeper at ground level or even from a tree stand provided the animal is not underneath. This is for tatics not hunting. Hunting from a chopper, go for it. But on the ground or in a tree with a 20 yd shot.... bring a flashlight and a rifle for the tracking.

You can buy 00 buck that will produce 1400-1600 feet-per-second.  That is roughly nine .33 caliber pellets!  That is some hog-killing medicine.  Imagine a hog getting hit simultaneously with nine .357 magnum bullets doing 1500 FPS?

We have killed DOZENS of hogs stone cold dead with buckshot.  The last place I would target is the head.  We have had excellent results with neck shots up to 25 yards out.  Up close, nothing out-performs buckshot.  Inside 20 yards the shoulder/heart/lung area is destroyed.

We have certainly killed more hogs with rifles than we have with buckshot.  But, in the thick stuff, with hogs coming out on me within 25 yards, buckshot every time.

There is no appreciable difference in the distance of the hogs vitals and spine (in the neck/shoulder area) when shooting from the side at ground level or from above.  This series of photos illustrates it perfectly.  That is unless you shoot for the gut area from above, hoping to hit the small target the spine offers.

http://www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html

Again, shooting a hog with 00 buck is equivalent to shooting him with nine .357 bullets at one time at 1500 FPS.  The ONLY tactical advantages of shooting from a helicopter is speed of the vehicle, ability to get closer and accessibility to where they hang out.  No ballistic advantage whatsoever, flight coefficient or internal.

Notice how the spine takes a southerly dip just before the shoulder area.  So, a shot midway of the animal, through the shoulder, and a little lower is the grits!

I've killed a lot of hogs during turkey season with #4 shot out to 20 yards.
I'm guessing the super tight choke helps with this less than optimum load . But a high shoulder hit will anchor a large hog right quick with that load, and pigs up to 50 lbs when hit with it roll up dead on the spot.

I don't see it as a bad idea. 000 buck would be a good load . When you consider before settlers crossed the Mississippi river many hunters used 36 and 38 cal. rifles with round ball to good effect on black bears , deer and hogs. 000 buck is 36 cal. and 0000 buck is 38 cal. Now consider instead of one 36 cal round ball you could have up to 15 going 1200 fps each .

We banned our friend from ever using his "Swinomatic" again and told him he could handgun hunt for pigs with one "Barney Fife" round.
I have not checked this thread in some time.  I reread all of the threads again.  I know I laughed at that when it was first posted but it is still good.
