SR9 or P95?
« on: October 15, 2010, 07:24:37 PM »
Is one supposed to be better than the other? Which do ya'll prefer? Are they supposed to be as reliable as Glocks?

1st the SR9... Love the ergonomics in my hand, great value for the money, high cap mags, I thought the original trigger was ok, but when they redesigned it I think they made it worse. I've heard of guys polishing them up and it improved. I cant say never pulled the trigger on one that was worked on. Size wise its about equal to the Glock 19.

2nd the P95... It's a work horse like my P89, but with the polly grip and shorter barrel. Lots of mags out there for it but I know the design of the trigger guard, you have to use P95 holsters. Its more rounded than squared... dont know why its different than the other P series? Much larger and not as easily concealed vs the SR9. But again, the P series are work horses.

Reliability like a Glock? Glocks have been put through rigorous torture tests and work. More than likely you wont come close to these extremes. My P89 goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Good quality ammo and propper care of any good firearm will serve you for life.

What's primarily is the handgun going to be used for?

My SR9 handles kinda like a 1911, is extremely accurate, and has never jammed. I like the thumb safety and the magazine disconnect, but I'm probably the exception.

Unless you're used to the trigger on a Glock, it may take a while to get accustomed to the trigger.

I like it enough to want to buy the compact version soon. :)

If their trigger was as clean as a Glock, Ruger would be selling loads of SR's to the civilian market vs the Glock at civilian prices.

I don't see why not!

My intent was to compare the "safe-action" trigger to one with a break a la 1911 or BHP.

I have no hands on with a sr but a p95 I have and have shot and carried, alot.  My carry is as a farm gun, shoot undesirables while brush hogging.  It  had one stovepipe in 600 rounds of cci blazers, primer backed out of case so not the fault of gun.  Accuracy is good for what it is.  My only complaint it the amby clip release is capable of dropping the mag if it rubs right on back pocket or holster, this would scare off as a concealed carry arm.  As a home defense not so much and pack rat killer its not an isuue to me.  It has always been right there for me and eats ammo like a fat kid with a bag full of jelly beans, one right after another.  Hope this helps. I've never fired the P95, but when I wanted a 9mm fun gun I handled them both. The SR9 won. It's been accurate with every thing I put through it, and has never jammed. Is it a Glock? No, but I wasn't buying a SD gun.

Got my wife the SR9c, and we're both tickled with it. No jams, easily concealed and very accurate.

I got used to a manual safety in the Military, so it's second nature, and doesn't slow me down.  Since it's my wife's first auto, she'll wind up being trained the same way...

I have owned both, love the SR9 better. The P95 was to bulky. I sold both when I got my SR9c. I have shot the SR9c a lot and never one problem. Runs great with all the different kinds of ammo I put through it.  Shot a Glock quit a bit as well, but it is on the bulky side as well.

Out of the 3 guns you mentioned in your post I would get the SR9, but I like the SR9c even better.

I bought a P95 in May of 2009. I was looking for a SR9, but the guy at the gun shop talked me out of the SR9, and into the P95. I have shot the pistol one time, and no more.  I want to get out and shoot, but the more I look at the SR9C the more I think the P95 mya go up for sale.

I own a P95, and have shot an SR9, and I'll say to get the SR9.  Absolutely nothing wrong with the P95 - it's a good value gun, but the SR9 does most things just a little better.  The trigger is better, the grip ergonomics are better, higher capacity, lighter weight.  It even looks better :).

IMHO if you just really couldn't muster up the extra $100 premium for the SR9, then I think that a P95 would serve you well, but if I were buying today I'd pay the extra.  Once I get a few other items knocked off my wishlist I'm pretty sure I'll get an SR9 eventually (though I won't be getting rid of my P95 either - I only sell guns if there's something notable that I specifically dislike about them).
