445 super mag
« on: September 02, 2011, 04:40:30 PM »
Hi everyone

not actually a handi related post sorry (although i do own one!) but thought i would post here because i know a whole bunch of you guys have done the conversion from 44 mag - 445 supermag. i actually have a cva scout which i am wanting to do this do. i am from new zealand so cannot hire a reamer but i am looking at buying one. have talked to pacific tool and guage who have quoted a reasonable price, they said it is to saami specs, should i go with this or are there possible slight changes worth making for use in a rifle? also while im here can anyone suggest a good powder to buy for use in the 445 with the hornady 265 ftx out of a 16" barrel. lil gun? would like to only have to buy one type of powder so will try and start with one which should hopefully give me a decent result. looking for as much range as i can get hoping to get out to 150-200 if possible.

thanks in advance.
adam.

The reamer Digger bought that I loan out is a PTG reamer, when you order it, make sure they know it's for a rifle, it's not the same as the one for a revolver cylinder, the rifle reamer cuts the throat too, I think it cuts a 6º leade which makes a big difference in accuracy. You also may want to order it with a size smaller pilot(.4224"), the pilot that came on ours was too big for some barrels including Digger's CVA Scout.

I've only shot H110 in mine.

Is it really worth the effort to ream a .44 mag to .445 Supper Mag?  The brass is hard to get and how much performance improvement are you getting?

My .445 was an older over bored 44 mag so I got .433 bullets from Montana Bullet works thinking they'd shoot well in it.  However, I got my best accuracy with 240 gr. Hornady XTPs over 32 gr. H110 running at 1585 fps, which should be within the velocity limitations of the XTP.  I think if I load the cast gas checked bullets from Montana hotter the accuracy will improve.

Geezer, I haven't had a problem finding brass.  And yes, I think it is well worth the conversion.  I was working on load development the other day and I broke the extractor claw so I had to quit.  The part, thanks to Tim's link, has been shipped and I should be back in business this week.  I'll post the results.

My .44 mag is also over bored.  It slugged out to .432".  It shoots great with 240g XTP bullets but I also want to shoot cast slugs.  I've toyed with the idea of reaming it to .445 SM but right now I'm leaning toward leaving it alone...

My solution was to by a cheap mold and modify it.  If I F' it up, I'm only out 20 bucks for the Lee mold.  I started with a 240g RN mold and expect to lap it out until it's a bit over .432".   I plan to load a few and see how they shoot.  Work has kept me from getting back to it.  So far I have one side of the mold at .431 and the other at .4315".  I've been thinking about ordering a .432 sizer but that will have to wait.

I just checked Buffalo Arms (buffaloarms.com) and they are listing .445 brass in stock.  When I bought my .32-20 brass it was listed as "low stock" and I got it.  A couple of days later it was gone.  If any of you guys need brass, I'd jump on it while the gettin is good.

That "Beagle" thing that Tim mentioned works great! I have a mold (Ranchdog 265 gr.) that now drops .433, and they shoot good in over sized barrel.

I dont remember what the powder from Oz is called, but they make equivelents for many of what we use here (USA). Surely that is more readily available for you in NZ and probably less expensive than getting 'our' powder?
