... Cause I don't want no stinkin' round barrel!   ::)  ;D

I just picked up a 38-55 Oliver Winchester Commemorative '94 yesterday. Unfired but with a couple of cosmetic issues so it's a shooter and in a few minutes I'll be heading to the range to try it. It has a 24" octagon barrel that balances quite nicely and it has a decent trigger too.

David D., that is one sexy lookin Encore, where did you get the stock?  I'd like to find one for my G-2 Contender in 7-30 Waters.  I want to keep that one set up full time, and switch barrels on the original Contender.  DP

Just received a canadian centennial win 94 with 26" long octagon bbl. have had the carbine version for some years. New in the box. Nice trigger, looks really nostalgic, hangs nice. Ah heck just go with what all the other posters have said. Can't think of anything else to add. Frank

It might be that  it added strength to a soft bbl. But they is prudy !
i do like them! my only one is a 32-40 win hiwall my gpa gave to me. i love that gun as much as i loved him.he wasnt a real sentimental guy but ill bet he be proud ive kept it all these years.and still shoot it too.ive read all the posts and ive still not come up with the actual reason that octagon barrels were so prominent.they were easier to make look right than a round barrel?possibley, but shotgun barrels from the same period look fine..could it be just a tradition from the muzzel loader days? but then ive seen plenty of muskets with round barrels, and actually the cheaper muskets had round barrels that were hand forged and looked fine.one guy said the germans did it and everybody followed them.i can see that.there must be a better reason?

Easier to clock correctly into the receiver than a round barrel. Just ask Marlin (Remlin Owners) about their round barrels today!

Plus they hang real nice when shooting offhand.

They don't hang any nicer than a round barrel of the same weight.
I think gunsmiths invented octagon barrels because they created so many more edges for the bluing to wear off. Made for lots of repeat customers. I am NOT a fan of octagon barrels and have refrained from buying several guns because they only came in octagon model. All of us are not nostalgic or enamored by 'cowboy' mentality

IMO they did it because it's easier to put one in a vice, screw the breechplug in or out, or screw it into a receiver.  You can put a wrench on an octagon barrel.  I've never seen an octogon barrel that was lighter than a round barrel.

A light, tappered, octagon barrel is a thing of beauty. Heats up more slowely than a round barrel, & is stiffer. One like my Marlin centenial model 39 shoots real good as well.  ;)  All the octagon barreled 86s I've ever owned shot good too.

Besides looking way cooler of course, wouldn't the sights have been easier to mount and level on an Octagon bbl.

"In most cases, there lighter than a round barrel".  Not true, those eight "corners" do add a bit of extra weight.  It is interesting, that the Sharps Rifle Co., when the Mod. 78..The hammerless Borchardt came out, tried convincing the public that round barrels were more accurate than the oct...this was due to the more even harmonics of the round barrel..But for the most part, the shooters of the day prefered the oct.
