Wal now Rick as a matter of fact you have them rat down yore way. Nearly in your back yard in fact.    You should give me a phone call some time and we'll talk about it. I can show ya better than tell ya but can do both or either as you choose. Don't expect one every time you go out and the rules to hunt them stink but Hollins is loaded with them.

Bill,thanks...I'll give you a call after New Year.Talked to a buddy of mine from Clay County and he said Hollins also.I was reading in rules and regs. about hog hunting.Damn, you have to hunt durning deer gun season on WMA's (Hollins). That sucks...I'd like to hunt them year round.I assume you can on private land, because of no closed season. But the hogs are at Hollins....just doesn't seem right.        Rick                                                                                                      "I never point a gun unless I intead to shoot, and shoot unless I intead to kill".

Rick, nope ya don't have to hunt them during deer season only. They are legal during ALL open seasons. That includes all the small game, spring turkey and fall dove seasons as well as deer season. The kicker tho is that you can ONLY use the weapon that is legal for the game with open season.

So during dove and turkey seasons that usually limits you to shotguns with bird shot. BUT handguns with iron sights are legal for turkey. During small game seasons again it is shotguns with bird shot or rimfire rifles. Probably more hogs are killed in Hollins with rimfire rifles by squirrel hunters than all other guns combined. You can at least use .22 magnums but most use semiauto .22LRs.

I believe GA, FL and MS are all much wiser in their management of the wild hog populations in their states than Bama is. Now on private land you can use pretty much anything any time (day time only that is). But on public land and especially the WMAs where they really want them gone they sure don't give us much chance to get them gone.

The rimfire is plenty IF you put the bullet in the head to reach the brain. If not well I'd not be wanting to do it. Most I've seen and spoken to who are really after hogs during squirrel season use semiautos and just try to put as many LR solids in them as they can and hope they find the hog when it dies. The .22 Mag in head/neck area should do fine. NOT JHPs tho.

Understand. During deer hunts there you can use it too. But ONLY then. Dumb rule but then we're usually about 10-15 years behind everyone else in such things.

There are a lot of hogs in the national forest near Oakmulgee WMA.  I hunt squirrel and deer over there and we have shot pigs over there during squirrel and deer hunts on the WMA.  There are a lot of people who run dogs for pigs in the national forest.  Although there is hog sign everywhere, they seem to be most prevalent in the low swampy areas.  I am with Bill, the WMA's want you to kill as many as possible, but they sure don't make it convenient to do it.  I would like to see a special season for hogs on the WMA's, but I guess they are afraid more people will poach deer if they are allowed to walk around with high powered rifles after deer season is ended.

You'er probably right about the poaching.I went deer hunting today(Friday) and ran into one of my buddys and neighbor, which just happens to be a game warden.I ask him about the hawgs;how stupid the rules and regs are.He said the same thing about the poacing, but said shoot all the hawgs you want.Yea....right.He said the same as GB,use a .22 like you're  hunting "tree rats".I said I wanted to hunt them year round......notta....private land.Oh well...............Rick

I used to hunt the National Forest land that joins Hollins and never saw any signs until the last year I hunted in there. Thanks to Clinton closing many of the National Forest roads, I was no longer able to get in there except walking or on a bicycle. The road is about 5 miles long. The last year I went in there (about 5 years ago) there was a section down by a creek that stays damp and it was all dug up. When I saw it I knew right off what had made it. They rooted up the ground like a tiller had been in there.

Hogs, Lowndes County
« Reply #14 on: December 31, 2003, 01:45:11 AM »
We're loaded with hogs on our hunting property in Lowndes County. We've got 650 acres next to Lowndes Mgt. Area. In one particular area the hogs have taken over, low swampy area, we hunt them year round. I have seen hogs there that will go over 400lbs. and where they have rubbed the mud on the trees as high as 36" up the tree.

The management area has a set of scales there that go to 500lbs. and there have been some hogs brought in that bottomed out the scales.
