How'd I do?
« on: August 31, 2011, 09:24:22 AM »
Just made a purchase today. I got an interarms mark X in 243 with a simmons scope mounted on it, dies, 2 partial boxes of bullets, brass, and 20 loaded rounds with the recipe for reloading them. It has a faux wood composite stock, and also comes with an extra walnut stock with contrasting caps on it. I think it is probably a great deal ($350), but am not really familiar with the specific gun.  It's in pretty nice shape, and seems to be shooting pretty decent, but I'll have to give a report after the weekend.
I figured that it will make a good starter gun for my boy to use for his first year deer hunting. I think it will do fine for that.

Congratulations on a good deal.  The Mark X mauser action is well made, and has been around for a long time.  Its the same action used in the recent Mitchell and Remington marketed mauser style rifles.  I have owned several, and all have been nice shooters.  The only problem I had with one was a terrible trigger, that I replaced with a $65.00 Timney unit.  Virtually any part made for the 98 mauser will work with your gun.

Personal opinion is a good thing, and everyone is entitled to one.  The hard part is separating informed opinion from someone who is just blowing hot air....

Thanks! It's good to know it uses 98 parts. That leaves a lot of options if necessary. I've never had my hands on one of these things before now.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it shoots. Youth season is in 2 weeks, so we'll have to shoot it quite a bit until then.

Agree the Mark X action is a good one.  Ive got one in a .375 H&H and it is a great shooter.  Now days about any rifle in decent shape is worth $350... even better if it comes with some ammenities.

Give your boy plenty of trigger time, and it will pay off when he gets his opportunity at a deer.

Cheers!

I've had mine for about 30 yrs now and ain't planning on getting rid of it any time soon! Don't know what recipe you got with yours but mine really likes a 100gr bullet and a near max load of H4831 or H414. Mine has a lot of freebore. I've not found a bullet yet that'll touch the riflings but this hasn't stopped it from shooting groups under an inch.
Hope ya'll have as much luck and fun as I've had with mine!

Hauled it to the range last night with a marlin39 and my 25-06. The 243 is heavy, and between that and the 85 grn gamekings, it was a nice mild recoil. My son had never shot a rifle before, so we put a bunch of rounds through the 22 first, and he got his groups down to minute of squirrel consistently. Then we started running the 243 at 25, then 50 yards. He's doing pretty well, and keeping decent groups without flinching, so I run a target out to 100 yards and turn him loose. First shot at 100 yards split the center. I think he's ready to hunt next week. :) Great job for his first time out. I like the gun, and will get him to work this weekend learning to load up rounds.
