Scope advise
« on: September 10, 2011, 07:48:55 PM »
Hello, I have a old savage model 110 in 300 win mag Last year I bought a cheap $70 scope at walmart but EVERY TIME i fire a couple rounds through it, it shakes the scope lose! I know this has to do with the cheap mounts too, But I need a scope and mounts that wont shake lose on me. Unfortunately I don't have a bundle of dough to drop on a scope, so Im looking for a cheap solution that will hold up to a 300 win mag.. What are my options?

For a decent, inexpensive scope, I would look at a new Redfield (It has Leupolds lifetime warranty), or maybe a Burris Fullfield.  I have several Fullfields on fairly hard kicking rifles, with no problems.  As far as mounts, any decent mount - meaning Burris, Weaver, Warne, Leupold - will work.  Just make sure you wipe the screws with solvent to remove the oil from the threads, use Loc Tite Blue on all threads, and fasten firmly with the proper screwdriver or torx bit.  You should be able to do a good set up for $200 or maybe a little less.  I like Mid-South and Optics Planet when shopping for glass.

Hmmm firstly no matter how much you spend upon the rifle and scope if you skimp on the mounts you are asking for trouble.

So firstly buy, beg or steal a decent mounting set up for your rifle. The .300 Win mag is not really that bad on recoil so those mounts really are crap or they were not fitted correctly. Any looseness or movement will wreck things.

I cannot suggest mounts as your idea of cheap and mine are probably very different plus the prices here in the Uk as so way out when compared to those in the US  >:( .

However have you considered a good used scope?

I cannot afford to buy decent optics new so hunt out good used scopes.

Weaver Tip-Offs or Burris Zees will work great.  Buy a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40 and you'll be glad you did.

Have you tried a Pentax Gameseeker? For $100ish I think they are an excellant scope. I've had one for a few years on a 30-06 bolt without any such issues. They have all the features you would expect in a $100 hunting scope. If I was on a $100 scope budget, I would consider it again. There are others as well in this price range. Just thought I would point this out. You don't hear people talk much about Pentax scopes but they are pretty darn good for the money. And, they make the glass for other scope companies and in some cases actually manufacture the entire scope that you find under other brand names & models.
