Help! Full resize die making dimples in brass
« on: September 16, 2011, 09:22:14 PM »
Hello all

I've been reloading for about 8 years now and I have never seen this happen before.  When I do a full resize, it's making a dimple in the brass on the shoulder.  I've had this die set and locked down like forever.  In frustration, I reset the initial depth of the die per Redding instructions and then adjusted depth slowly until the bolt would close easily, yet it is still creating dimples.

Can someone please tell me what is causing this?

Thanks a bunch!

well the only time ive seen what your talking about is when too much lube was applied to the cases before sizeing and it formed what is called hydraulic denting.  the excess lube has no place to go but in.spray lubes can cause this. or to much lube on your pad if you roll lube.try takin your dies apart and cleaning them well and then useing a minimal amount of lube.let us know what you find?

Hey Hillbill

I already took the die apart and cleaned it.  I'm using Imperial Sizing Wax and I was just getting a little on my fingers and then rubbing on the brass as I have always done.  I don't think I was putting too much on as I was just barely coating the brass.... but maybe I was using too much.

I'll try again and will not use any wax on the neck and shoulder and see if that works.  I'll let you know.

Thanks

FYI..... I did notice that the dimples were occuring in different places on the shoulder (i.e. front, sides, back) in no apparent consistant pattern.  So, I don't think there is anything stuck or caked to the inside of the die or else the dimples would occur in the same place every time.

It's probably just the amount of sizing was being applied.

We'll see in the morning

Thanks

Make sure you clean out the small pressure relief hole in the side of the die body as well,it can be clogged with polishing compound, grease, lube etc.

It is from excess lube.  I use Imperial all the time and never had a dented shoulder until I started using it.  I still like it the best, I just learned how much to use and where to put it to keep from denting the case.

As another posted said, shoot them and they will go away.

After applying case lube, I wipe it off the neck & shoulder with a paper towel to remove the excess lube. A cotton towel seems to remove too much, but there's always enough left to prevent sticking. Most cases stick down by the base, where the heavy sizing takes place.

I use spray lube, but I line up say 10 cases on a towel, cover the necks and shoulders with my index finger, then spray. Seems to have eliminated the shoulder dents. Just let it dry a minute or so before sizing.
