I just purchased one in 45/70.  Sorry to say I haven't fired it yet.  Here are a some preliminary observations. By the way, I am new to the Thompson Encore.

I have read several threads that says the throat is non-existent in the 45/70 and looking down the barrel that is what it looks like.   However, I have some Remington 405 grain bullets loaded for my lever action and they chamber just right.  C.O.L is 2.550

I have a standard encore (not pro-hunter) with black synthetic stock and for-end.  My fore-end is just a touch narrow.  Screw holes are correct.  I put some sandpaper on the correct size tool socket and a few minutes later it fits fine.  The 26" barrel still fits and looks good. I'm still curious as if the 28" PH is the same diameter as the 26” or if it is larger like the 20" Katahdin.

I really would like to mount some sort of small red dot on it and keep the peep sight.  However, the peep is using the holes for the scope mount.  It is a one or the other affair.  Front sight has a screw in it.  I haven’t tried to remove the front sight, but it looks like it will come off.

I like the looks feel of the 20” 45/70 Katahdin and don’t plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.  I also hope to shoot it in the near future.

I hope this information helps about the Katahdin.

I have one in the 45/70 and is very accurate using the Hornady lever action ammo, I have a burris compact on it with quick detach rings, and a XS peep sight that clamps on to my warne scope base so I can use either a scope or the peep sight. If you want a compact, fast handling gun the Katahdin barrels are great.

I also have another question concerning barrels. The older or 1st run Katahdin barrels were 18'inches , the new ones are listed at 20inches - Why the change? ALso- Did'nt the older katahdin barrels come ported??

Dogmann,
I bought a Katahdin barrel but mine is in 209x50. I wanted to keep the peep on but a scope works better for me now as I get
older. I bought a PeepRib sight system from EABCO. I mounted a 2-7x35 Burris scope on the rifle with Quick-detach rings. I have
sighted both the peep and scope in, and the scope comes off fast. I also used this on my 24 in. 45-70 barrel. Works great.  I'm
hoping to get a katahdin barrel in a 45-70 also and will use this set-up. It works great for me.

I have the older 18" 45-70 barrel and yes it comes ported :( ??? .  I still like it even though I'm not a ported fan.  When I bought it my original idea was to cut the brake off and use it as a pistol barrel but have never done so...already have a couple off Contender pistol barrels in 45-70 and don't use my Encore as a pistol hardly ever...so it has escaped my chop shop so far.  Actually, it makes a pretty good pistol barrel just the way it is 8) .  One of my Contender "pistol" barrels is a 23" Bull barrel that I cut to 18" and use in pistol configuration.  It isn't much for concealed carry but shoots like a dream 8) .  I fitted my Katahdin barrel with a peep and the factory fitted big orange ball up front.  One of my favorite 45-70 loads is a cast soft lead 330HP bullet greased up with a good BP lube and a case full of 777 ;D 8) ;D .

I have the Katadin 45/70 and love it. It will shoot most Federal Blue Box 300 gr loads into 11/4" groups and 100 and is unblieveably accurate with the 325 gr Hornady LE loads. It produces one ragged hole with 5 shots with the Hornady's and I used them to take a great 9pt buck here in VA over Thanksgiving week.
I used it with a Burris Fastfire II during deer season. Also have a Leupold 2 X 7 that I interchange with the Burris sight.
Great little gun.
