Weird chamber on #3
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:07:12 PM »
Finally got to shoot my #3 Ruger in 375 Win. this weekend.  Good news is it shoots good with 375's loaded with 220 Hornadys and LOVES Winchester 38-55 ammo.  Here's the problem, when I eject a fired cartridge,  it comes out about 3/8" and stops.  I can pull the case out but with enough resistance it almost broke a finger nail.  This only lasts about 3/8-1/2 inch then the case falls out.  Fired cases pushed back in do the same thing in reverse, fall in partway, have to be pushed, then fall the rest of the way in.  This happens with warm 375's and the extreamly mild Win. 38-55's, like the front of the chamber is a bit larger than the middle, wasp-waisted so to speak.  Anyone run into this?  I'm thinking of contacting Ruger and see what they have to say, but I want to keep the 375 barrel on the gun, looked a long time to find one.  Wondering if chasing the chamber with a 375 Win. or 38-55 reamer would take the narrow part out or if the reamer wobbled when Ruger did it so it's bigger at both ends of the chamber.  Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.  DP

Contacted Ruger, standard answer, box it up and mail it in with a letter stating the problem.  Now, do I want to do that, or see about a local smith looking at the issue. :-\  DP

you might have a local smith, if yu have a competent one, do a chamber cast. but if it is wasp waisted as yu think it will be hard to get the cast out and the smaller diameter middle part of the chamber will swage the front part of the cast down to its size.there shud be evidence of this happening.however if i remember correctlly, the chamber cast will shrink so it can be knocked out and then swell to the size of the chamber when it fully cools.yu might try a post over in the gunsmithing section. those guys really know sum stuff!

The ejector is adjustable.

Have you cleaned the chamber really good?  ;) That would be the first thing I'd try.

If you had a tight spot I dont see how it could get any easier by pushing the cartridge in past a certain spot.
Wasp shape would give you a tight spot all the way in and upon firing it would be a bear to get out. MOO

I should have replied earlier, seems the falling block was rubbing on the rim at a certain point creating a tight spot for the cartridge coming out.  When the case was fired, it expanded the walls enough the case had no "wobble" to allow it to eject past the falling block.  Before firing, there was enough room for it to slide in and out without issue.  My favorite gun pusher roomed with the head of Ruger and spoke with him about this, the rifle is headed back to Ruger to be repaired.  This is just another example why I try to buy most of my stuff from him, he always goes above and beyond when it comes to customer service.  This even though I purchased this rifle from another gun shop.  As i told Jim, he gets more of my money than my wife does. ;D   DP
