Sierra GameKings suitable for Whitetail Deer?
« on: September 10, 2011, 04:06:37 AM »
I have a Tikka t3 Lite in 25-06 and was wondering if these would be fine in 117gr. for the average sized deer here in Missouri and at what approximate maximum ranges for a good humane kill?  Thanks!    :)

I used the 100 Pro-hunter in my 243s, which is just a flat based version of the GK, I'll be using the 85gr GK this year. It'll kill them as far as you can hit'em.

;) I have used both gameking and prohunter on lots of game..Serria's tend to be pretty soft, but on whitetails, that really isn't a problem...Shot1 loves this load and caliber for whitetails...I really like my .25-06 with either 100 or 115-117 grain bullets for deer...But I prefer to use this caliber a load at reasonable ranges...with in the normal ranges one shoots whitetails it has  worked very well.... :D

I've got some H4350 and H4831sc I thought about trying to work up a good load with one of them and the 117gr. GameKings. Also, I have some Varget any thoughts or other ideas are welcome.  Thanks!     :)

:)  5200,  Either should work very well...for my .25-06 I used IMR because I had a large supply of it in 4350 and 4831...I also use Re 22 again because I have a large supply...I am not certain Varget would work well with the heavy bullets..I have only used it in .223 and 22-250....If I were you I would load some 117's over some test loads of both powders and see what shoots best...I used to us H4831, but when my supply was exhausted I went with IMR...bought a bunch before I retired...I would go with the H series if I were beginning to resupply...

Lets not turn this thread into just a reloading thread or I will move it elsewhere as stated the 25-06 is good for whitetailed deer.   Jim

p5200, that 117 grain GK bullet at 2900 FPS muzzle velocity will get to 280 yards within 3" above or below your point of aim and still have 1350 foot pounds of energy so it will certainly kill deer easily at that range.  I would note that it will have almost 7" drift of windage at that distance if you have a 10 MPH crosswind.

A look at Hodgdon's website will get you load info.

It was quite proper to ask it here, no problem with the post, but it was starting to turn into a reloading Q&A which there is a forum for.  Thanks  Jim
