Axis bolt problem
« on: September 24, 2011, 06:08:19 PM »
I bought a Savage Edge to play with, and use in Hunter Ed Classes. I had a problem with the bolt. When you open the bolt sometimes the firing pin button would not stay in the notch in the bolt body leaving it uncocked. The bolt would not go forward into the receiver. You had to take a block of wood and cock the bolt. The more that I used it the worse it got. I called Savage for  fix. They told me they were aware of the problem, and to send the gun to them. I had a brand new on in a week. On the last HE Class the new one did it twice. It only happens with the students. At home I can not duplicate the problem; Working the bolt slow, fast, hard, or easy. Have any of you had this problem. It is real annoying. I got good at re-cocking it. After replacing the 6 lb trigger with a Rifle Basic I can shoot clover leafs constantly at 200 yards with Hornady 55g V-Max Varmint Express factory ammo.  I like the rifle, and would love to find a fix for the problem.

The only problem I have had with a Savage rifle was with a 220 slug gun I bought right after they came out.  It took two trips back to Savage for the issue (failures to fire) to be fixed properly which didn't make me particularly happy.

To their credit though, some months later I had to have my 10ML II muzzleloader's barrel replaced and they did not charge me for the barrel or some other accessories I ordered.  I had told them that I was the one who damaged the rifle and that it was not a warranty claim.  They responded that they were aware of that but it had taken two tries to fix the slug gun so they weren't charging me the $200 plus for the new barrel or for the accessories.

I would call them, explain the unresolved issue and send it back.

I went to Savageshooters.com. This is not an uncommon problem. I followed one of their recommendations, The rear end of the firing pin spring has a sharp end that catches on the bolt nut and preloads the spring when you open the bolt causing the problem. I rounded the end of the spring wire with a course stone, polished the whole end with crocus cloth, then lubed it with a high quality oil. It malfunctioned the second shot, but hasn't don it again for 30 rounds. I hope that fixed it.
