New Englander = Rust
« on: September 29, 2011, 10:36:53 AM »
I have recently purchased four New Englander rifles. They all have some rust. The first is a 50 that I cleaned up, shoots very well, but still has some 'freckles'. The second was a 54 that was supposed to be 'like new', I sent it back. The third  is a 54 that I got very cheaply, the pix looked OK. It is a total rust bucket. To cover the crust the seller on GUNBROKER painted all the exposed metal black [name on request].  I made that one into a fantasy wallhanger as an AFS [assault front stuffer]. The last is a 54 that appears to have cleaned up well. It looks good but I haven't fired it yet. Getting a rust free 54 seems difficult. I have replaced rusty octagon barrels with new ones, but I can't find new round T/C barrels.

Thanks for reading my venting of frustration     P.A.

pine ridge still open ? nemurich arms ?
Reblue or brown  them , if cost is a factor get the kit and try it yourself. Have you tried flitz ? or baking soda mixed with machine oil ? and for the bore , action and other places KROIL OIL works wonders.

there's no excuse for stuff like that and it'll come back to haunt the seller some day.
btw, I shot the same 50 hawken for 30 years and never a speck of rust.

i think the barrels on the PA. hunter will fit also. you might call t.c. and ask them but they stopped making those guns makes getting barrels hard. hope you have some luck

Early PA hunters were half round, later all octagon[15/16]. I used a Pa hunter carbine barrel to make a short hawken. Its almost a drop-in. They will drop-into a White Mountian.

I have been able to clear a couple of barrels of light rust. At a certain point the pitting ruins the barrels. I was able to clear the rust from the wallhanger bore, but it still looks like a bad road.

If the 54 cleaned up as well as the 50 [shoots good], all is well.

What is flitz?

Flitz is a metal polish and protectant they also make a gun wax and tumbler media additive.

Often flitz will remove surface rust and not damage the finish.

Yes it is. On GUNBROKER you grade A+ to F.  I only give an F if I don't get anything at all, just plain ripped off.  I gave a D- and explained the deception, that no one will read. I did get it very cheap and could recover the cost by parting it out.  Oh well.....

I shot the 54 Saturday [10/8] and it shot very well.  Loaded smoothly with both ball and maxi. Finally got a good one.
