changing barrels change poi?
« on: September 25, 2011, 11:32:36 AM »
If you sight in one barrel and take it off and then sight in another barrel would the first barrel still be sighted in if you put it back on? I ask cause I have a 357 mag. (soon to be max), 44 mag. , 410, and 20ga USH and don't want to sight in the USH and then have to spend $3 a shot to have to re-sight it in after a barrel change.

If the scope stays on the barrel and you use the same fore arm and are also consistant with tighten the screw, I would think it would be real close if not right on.

When I first got into Handis I bought my first, a .45-70, used as a complete factory fit rifle.  I sent the frame to H&R for 3 additional barrels and went through the back and forth routine.  I think it did change POI slightly.  I got tired of it and now all my Handis are on their own dedicated stocks and frames.  In your case, it should take only one carefully aimed and rested shot to see and correct any minor deviation.

Yeah, I don't mind it being a little off ( couple inches) thats pretty easy to fix , but didn't want it to be way off and drop a fortune to get it back on target.
Thanks

At first I thought they (Handi Rifles) would be like my TCR and Contenders.  Found out different.  First I bought a 30-06.  Sent it back and had a .223 barrel fitted.  Noticed when I changed barrels the POI changed as much as four inches at 100 yards.  Unacceptable in my book, since I often shoot beyond two and three hundred yards.  Now I have a dedicated frame for each barrel.  Don't exchange nothing.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

With the set screw in the forend screw hole and a rubber o-ring you can get that a lot closer to a "constant" than you would without it but I find mine are sometimes up to 2 inches off after the switch. For a 10 yard shot it wouldn't matter but I would not hunt without at least a couple shots to correct zero.   thejanitor

Well I'm heading north to put some stands out and sight in the 357 and 20ga USH, and figured I would take and get them dead on at 100 yards then take and shoot a group at 25 yards and keep the target then after done using the 357 for the season switch barrels and then do a quick group at 25 yards and compare the new to the old  target to see if I need to do a 100 yard sight in again. But in the long run I think I'm gonna pick up some frames and make full firearms out of them, they would  look better than a barrel hanging there in the man cave.
Thanks again everyone,
Neil

I never could get used to the idea of having an extra barrel set aside in my safe, and the thought of taking one barrel off that I knew was zeroed and replacing it with one I just took out of the safe and expecting it to hit where it did a few months earlier, I just couldn't get my mind to accept.

I wouldn't even take the chance personally, so that is why I don't have any extra barrels anymore.

Some people benefited from my phobia. :'(
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
