How collectable?
« on: January 21, 2012, 09:12:20 AM »
My Dad recently passed away and I wass given his gun collection. One of the guns is an old, what I believe to be , model 10 S&W. It is a .38 s&w with a 5" barrel. One odd thing that I haven't seen anywhere else is that it has a small cutout shaped like a home plate, just above the front of the trigger guard. My Dad always said that it was a Canadian Mounted Police pistol and that's where a badge was. It also has a hole for a lanyard in the bottom of the grip.
Also a family friend just gave me a model 67-1 .38 special, that he bought new in 1977 (i think). It is unfired and he gave me the original box.
My question is, are either of these guns of any significant value to a collector. I'm not wanting to sell either, I just want to get an idea. Also, since the model 67 is unfired, I was wondering if it be worth leaving unfired or if I should just enjoy shooting it.
Any thoughts?

You won't be able to pay off the farm with the sale of both.
Both should be worth in the $500 + range--depending on condition---the box, all papers and parts would be worth another $100+.

Kinda what I figured. Like I said, I'm not getting rid of either. The old model 10 has sentimental value, because my dad has had that gun as long as I can remember. The model 67 is for my 17 year old son. He hasn't done much pistol shooting, so after he gets some experirence and a little older, I will let him decide if he wants to shoot it or not. It's a beautiful gun, colectible or not.
Thanks for the reply.

Pass the M10 on to your son at the appropriate time.
There is no time like the present to let him give the M67 a good wringing out--it won't hurt the value.
