Been doing some research myself, the Mossberg (American made) and the Weatherby SA-08 (Turkish) both seem to be well-liked by most owners.

Almost all semi-autos in this price range are made in Turkey by just a few different manufacturers and then imported.  The gas guns appear to be based on the Beretta 300 series design.  The Stoegers, of course, are copies of the Benelli "inertia" action.

You might look at a CZ 712; it lists for under $500.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I've got a Weatherby SA-08 synthetic stock, gave $425 for it and love it. Mine's a 20ga but the 12s are just 1/2lb or so more. Never shot the Inertia Drive action but heard it's got more kick to it than the gas guns.

Wally World was selling a synthetic Beretta 390 for $500 something, not sure if they still do.

Guns you get what you pay for.

Cheap autos = Jam- Poor fit & a finish that rust's- barrels that are not tapped straight some are even bent all that will = worthless patterns.

Add an extra $100 and get a 11-87 sportsman or a Berreta 3901.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

Some friends have had good luck with the Stoger auto - Benelli M2 knock offs   Berretta rather than sue Stoger bought them.  They are basically an M2 with poor fitting front stock.  Like all Benelli autos you need to shoot them for a while before they become Boom Boom Boom.  Benelli says 50 rounds I would put 100 through the stoger before rendering an opinon.
I would look in the used racks.  Saturday when at a local shop he had a Berretta 390 for $250 on the shelf.  After looking at it, the inside was perfect the outside had some rust spots.  At $250 for a berretta I am torn do I buy the ugly(rust spots) gun and do a camo job on the gun and have a duck or turkey gun for under $325 with tax title, paint, degreaser, and tape?  Many used guns are in shops as people either want to trade up, realize they don't use it, the new wife freaks, or they want the $ for something else.
I am mad that a year or two ago I let a Remington 11-87 slip thrugh my fingers, litterally.  I was lookig at it and a guy walked in and was looking over my shoulder at it for 375.  Needed a cleaning, as most used guns do, and  had a 30" barrel with chokes.  The guy looked over my shoulder and was asking me about, I said it would make a great duck and turkey gun as well as double for dove, quail and sporting clays and I was not sure if I wanted it, when he told the sales person he wanted it.
I purchased a used Remington 1100 about 3 years ago for 275.  The wood and reciever were perfect.  The barrel was a cut down 30 inch to 25.  and had a few rust spots and no choke.  Gun worked great.  Was breaking trap with it at past handicap ranges. I painted the barrel a flat black and it worked for a while as I gathered $ for a new tube. I spent a couple hundred on a new barrel.  And have gun that looks like brand new for under 550 after selling the barrel.

Might take a look at Franchi.  Has an inertia driven system without gas tubes etc, like the benelli, but this camo version comes in at $536 and looks like a lotta gun for the bucks.  ;)

Stay away from the Franchi. It's a cheap imitation of a Bennlli. I had a NIB one and sold it two months later. Jam, Jam, Jam. Stoeger's are no better. The quality just isn't there. For your price range for a few bucks more go for the old reliable Remington 1100 or 1187. Chas. Daly does not manufacture guns but imports them and slaps their name on it-they use to have quality firearms but that was sometime ago. CZ imports from turkey and seem to function well. I know you mentioned you didn't want used but in your price range you may wish to reconsider a Beretta used which will give you many years of usage then some new cheapo  in which you'll spend your time clearing jams.

A 390 for $250? Unless it's deeply pitted I'd own that one.

How many rounds did you put through the guns.  Even the benelli jams a bunch for the first 50- to 75 rounds.
When ever any of my friends would get a benelli (one of our friends was the rep and we would buy samples from him) or if we were going to do a shooting show like the one in Southern Ca on the first weekend of June we would get the guns a week ahead of time (if new) and go out and shoot sporting clays to break them in before they hit the shooting bench for the public to play with.  Same with the Stogers and the only Franchi I played with was the Al 28 that was a 20 ga Browning Auto 5 action.  I really liked that little gun as a quail gun and someday will order one.  I like how the whole reciever fit in my medium sized hand.  But this is not about that.
If you can find a shooting fair where the reps bring out guns and let you shoot them for a fee, I would go.  I would also go to a sporting clays event and see if anyone has some of the guns you are loking at and ask if you can shoot them and see what they think about them.  Most guys will let you shoot their guns if you have factory ammo and ask.  I broke a firing pin on one of my side my sides and just borrowed different guns for about 90 targets.  Fun day.
I think I will go get the beretta steel wool and some paint.  But first I need to see if I have a destruction manual for the gun so I can take it all apart and really clean it and paint it right.

Haven't had a jam yet in over 200 shells through the Weatherby. They're made in Turkey but I really don't care. I had a Rem 1100, metal and wood were great but it would jam every so often and it's heavier. The Weatherby comes with two gas pistons, one for light and one for heavy loads. Some people will complain about having to change pistons but it takes no longer than changing a choke tube. I haven't had the need to change to the heavy piston yet.
Walmart has them for 437, but I got mine from Jetguns, free shipping and no tax.
Weatherby has some decent videos on their website too.

I know you said your not buying used but If I wanted a good semi-auto shotgun for cheep I would. A friend just picked up a older but in excellent condition, 12 ga, ted williams shotgun for $175.00. By the way this model was mfg. by winchester. I frequently find them in the 200$ range.  ;) Best deal in a shotgun that I know of....

I put approximately 800 rounds through the Franchi. It never ceased jamming. I tried heavy loads thinking it would make a difference-not; tried different brands-not. Perhaps as they say the gun was made on a Monday.

Well since your against anything used - a used Browning A5 is out of the question! I just picked up a 1966 A5 12ga Light for $750. And it's by far better then anything "New" on the market! But I'm prejudice I love A5's and this is my third one!  I have a 12ga Mag, Sweet 16 ga, and now 12ga Light!
This started for me about a 2 years ago when I wanted to get a Semi auto to replace my pump gun.  Went looking at and handled all the major brands and was put off by not only the price but the quality of the guns.  Then I found  the 12 ga Mag A5 at $600 bought it an never looked back, my Dad gave me the Sweet 16ga, and I just purchesed the 12 Ga Light yesterday! All Belgiun made.
In my mind there's never been a better  semi auto shotgun made over the Belgiun Browning's! ;D

Sounds like a good trade.
I wounder if the gold was not re or assembled right at one point and something is blocking the gas port.
I bought a Browning B2000 that the shop guys said didn't work, took it apart and cleanind it, grabbed a manual and reassembled it.  The gas port buffer (for lack of a different word) was upside down and the gas was not able to move the piston.  It now works.  Not bad for a 185 out the door.
I wonder if someone in the shop took the gun apart and reassembled it incorrectly if it has never worked right and either the gun is missing a part or has the parts in an incorrect order.  Take it apart, clean it.  and use a diagram to reassemble the gun.  90% of the guns I come across are that are malfunctioning are two parts interchanged or upside down or something like that that stops them from functioning.

Like one of the previous post the weatherby sa-08 seems to be something you may really won't to consider! I had the opportunity this past weekend to dove hunt with one of these guns and I was really impressed with how it felt (weight wise) and how it preformed !!!!!!! Not one hiccup !!!  I will own one of these guns before this weekend is up!! They run around 400 to 450 I think he said. I hope this helps some . Almost forgot it was a 20 ga. And the shells I ran through it were estate heavy game.

Good trade.
I think you will be happy with the 11-87.  Great guns and multiple options to lego the gun.  (swap barrels, stocks,)  Still kicking my self for not jumping on the last one.
I sometimes think that the service departments just unwraps the guns stick one shell in them and shoot it, and send it back with out reading what is wrong.  My guess was a shop kid screwing around.
On Friday the Silver Mallerd was still on the shelf and is now waiting for me to pick it up in a week.
Not sure if I am going to paint it, use camo shelf paper, or leave it as is.   Guess I will figure it out when I get it out to the sporting clay range.

My M2000 has jammed on me once and I blame that on a poor reload.  My buddy wasn't very preticular on his reloads because he used a double.  My old man borrowed rounds from the truck without telling me and we were 2 hours from home.  Never an issue with factory ammo.

I strongly second the votes for a used Beretta 390 or 391.  They are extremely reliable.  Built like tanks.

Just make sure that you don't buy one from a skeet shooter, who may have already put 25,000 to 50,000  rounds through it.  Buy one from a duck hunter.  They seem to shoot their guns very little, and then get a new one every other year.
