Hunting land ?
« on: January 05, 2004, 03:06:30 PM »
I am looking to purchase a parcel of hunting land in Florida, within 3 hours of where I live so I can go often during deer season and year round for hogs. My question is: what is the minimum amount of land I would need. Land here is somewhat expensive as compared to most other states. I am finding several parcels resonably priced in the range of 50 - 80 acres. Is that enough? Some of these parcels border national forrest land, hunt clubs and preserves, so it's not like it is a small piece of land bordered by non-game habitat. Although, maybe that's not a plus as I may find other hunters trespassing on my land. I don't know. Any experience would be welcomed.

Thanks for any replies and advise!

I don't think there really is any particular minimum. It really is totally dependent on the deer herd and carrying capacity of the land surrounding you and the management practices on that land as well as your own. Also on whether the deer regularly travel thru your land now or if you can cause them to begin doing so.

I regularly hunt on a plot of 40 acres in size surrounded by mountainous wooded land with few openings. This place is a real travel zone for deer. I've been hunting there since '88 and have taken a LOT of deer off of the land. Most of them on this one 40 acre parcel altho in the past I have had access to much of the additional surrounding land and did hunt it also.

Thanks for the response Graybeard. I feel a little more confident in my efforts. I will do more homework with the properties I am looking at.
