Hog calling
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:03:00 AM »
anyone got an opinion on this?

is it effective? if so, what calls seem to work?

seems some people swear by them.. others think that calling hogs is a waste of time..

hand calls vs electronic?

was wondering what people here thought..

Ive never used calls for any hunting.. never really had a need..

I was looking at the foxpro website and saw that they sell downloads of their electronic calls relatively cheap.. but their actual digital calls are pretty expensive.. does anyone know what format these calls come in? MP3? can they be played on any digital player? or are they in a proprietary format that only works with their devices?

Thanks!

My daughter purchased a "hog squeeler" distress call that is very similar to a deer grunt call in construction which 100% guaranteed drives my 20-year old son berserk!  I give it a "honk" and he is "on it" like a jolt of electricity was instantaneously run through his computer chair.

I have heard, but not tried, that distress calls of fawns, wood peckers, squirrels, hogs, etc. can be used to attract hogs PROVIDED the hogs are already in the near-field where they can HEAR the call.

I have been fortunate with an abundance of hogs and feeders that attract them and have no need for the call...except to irritate Nick ( hehe ).

:)  Howdy! I have never had any luck with a hog call of any kind. I have an electronic caller with a tape that sounds like hogs feeding. I tried it a bunch of times and never had one come to it. As said previously, a good baited area is better than any call. Best of luck! And good hunting!  Always, Gene

thanks guys.

at one place I am hunting this season, there isnt an abundance of hogs (yet) but they are out there and starting to make problems for the rest of the game in the area..

havent done any intentional hog hunting on the land yet.. but was thinking about starting to do so (rather than waiting to see if one shows up while looking for something else)..

Lots of ways to attract them.  I use 1-gallon milk jugs suspended from a tree limb with a hole cut into the top of the jug allowing me to fill it with whole kernal corn.  Then into the jug goes sugar and water to the top.  Fermentation starts within 12 hours and by 48 hours that smell permeates the near-field.  Downwind the hogs smell it and come to investigate.  Put a pig pipe right there with corn in it for them to push around and they will return until it is empty.  Fill it a couple of times and they will make that location a regular stop to see if there is some easy feed.  Works quickly, costs practically nothing.

Cheapest way is a 4-foot piece of 6-inch diameter PVC pipe; one 6-inch diameter smooth walled push-on end cap; wrapping wire; and hack saw.

1.)   when pipe is standing vertically use hack saw to cut one end of the PVC pipe at 60-degrees (+/-) about 4-inches above the ground, so the pipe end looks like one-half of this "V"

2.)  Find a tree in the woods.  Wire wrap the pipe vertically with the "V" toward the ground and facing outward from the tree.  Wire wrap it well.  Pigs will knock it down otherwise.

3.)  Fill the pipe with ~50 pounds of whole kernel corn.  Put on the smooth end cap at the top to keep water out.   The corn will run out of the "V" at the bottom, but just enough so the pigs have to work for it.

Real Cheap, real easy to build, and practically zero set-up time.

Depending on how much of the "V" you leave exposed above ground at the bottom, the pigs will either get a little or a lot of your corn.  Once they find a pig pipe, keep it fed a while and they will come back routinely.  Mark the pig pipe with the hanging gallon jugs of fermenting corn and they will find it all very quickly, provided there are pigs in the area.

Beer added to the jug works too.

Three or four of the McDonalds sugar packs is all it takes.  couple of teaspoonfuls.  Just enough to kick it off.

Ok,Land Owner sounds to me that you have a little shine makin experience to me! LOL. I have only killed one hog and I was using the Foxpro. I didnt have alot of faith in it but knew it could be an ace in the hole. I had the wild pig in distress playing for a few mins max. He didn't come charging in but rather slipped in quietly, rounded a tree and ran smack into a 308 bullet. I hope this helps y'all. It may not work every time, but it did work the one time.

Wish I could say that was true.  I was given a beer making set once for Christmas.  I never opened it...it was too easy to just buy it already made and iced cold.
