Bullet Picture
« on: September 13, 2011, 05:23:15 AM »
Hopefully this works.
Attached are three pictures of a 44 cal 265 gr Hornady FN that was recovered from a moose. It has been a number of years so the jacket material is discolored. The range was less then 50 yards. The rifle a Marlin 444.
The bullet expanded to .702" and the remaining weight is 253.1 gr fired from a full house load.

I don't know what more you could ask from a cup& core bullet or any other type.

I could ask for a "exit hole" as that's what i MUCH prefer!  Of course, then you wouldn't have a bullet to show.  lol

Unless you could dig the bullet out of a conveniently located tree. ;D

Yes, that is good for a cup & core bullet.

However, if your can get ahold of some good cast boolits, those with a LARGE MEPLAT, you just may never look at "J" bullets again.

From what I read, the .444 has lots of folk in it's camp.

Check out the Marlin Owners Forum or the Cast Boolit Forum.

I have now taken two eat'in critters with the 45/70, cast boolits with the large meplat, and everything I read about how good they are seems right in line from my results.  AWESOME!

First critter with a 355gr and the second, a very large and barren cow elk taken this past Aug. 1st, with a 465gr boolit.  WOW.

It may take a bit, and maybe a lot more effort to get a cast boolit to shoot as well as the "J" bullets, but the satisfaction of taking the critters with your own boolits is special.

I should have started much younger, in stead of waiting until I was an Ol'Coot.

That meplat thing is what concerns me. :-\
With the exception of one commercial cast bullet from a Magma mold all I have a LEE molds and none of them have a to me impressive size meplat.

Scatterbrain,

One poster I see here and over on Cast Boolits Forum, likes the - talking 45-70 here - RCBS 405gr.

He says it is effective on game.

Doesn't have as large a meplat as I like.

Go to the Cast Boolit Forum and get ahold of Bruce - BABore - and he can take care of your mold needs at a reasonable price.

I have a couple LBT molds, and they were the best molds I had seen or used until I bought one from Bruce.

AS good as Veral's molds are, Bruce takes the quality up a level.

Veral Smith from LBT is a Crusty Ol'Coot like me, but Bruce is a very personable fellow, the kind you'd love to sit down with on a regular bases, and drink a cup of coffee or 3.

Nice guy, very willing to answer your questions!

There are a number of mold makers who offer boolits with the big meplat, but having seen and used molds from both of these makers, can really recommend their products.

By the way, Bruce filled my mold order almost before it got to him.  Don't know if his turn around is always that quick, but it was really fast on the 4 cavity 465gr GC mold I ordered.

He also gave me some guides as per alloy, powder and boolit lube, all of which have proved out.

Do a bunch of reading as to the effectiveness of the large meplat.  From my limited experience it is still hard to believe a non-expanding boolit can be that effective.  AWESOME!

Read for yourself!

Keep em coming!
