But left with a Ki-oat!
Front had come through yesterday afternoon with the thermometer near the 21degree mark at 6:00 this morning.
Was on a hillside with a small pasture to my right and the woods being just 80yds away. Could see down the south edge of the woods for 600yds where it branched off into more woods. Entire area bordering this was picked corn & soybean stubble.
First saw the coyote at 250yds coming in at a dead run in response to my MallardTone short range squaller. Had about a 5min wait as I shut up while he was parked at the base of the hill 145yds away. This was a no shot situation as there was plenty of scrub trees and brush in between us. Knew he would circle though. Either to the left to the open pasture, or to the right into the bean stubble. He chose the right and promptly collected a 55gr Hornady (#2267) from the .22-250 through the lungs.
Usually average 1 in 10 success rate with the cottontail squaller, but have done better using the howler or a combination of the two.
I will not hunt the area above for at least 7, if not 10 days. Exceptions to this would be to use a totally different call. A turkey call such as the double Kee Kee can work well. Start with a few clucks, but then really pour it on in volume and intensity.
I have even used a MR. Squirrel call. Like to have a small sapling close so as to operate with foot pressure, shaking it hard while blowing on this distress.
And finally: How do ya post pictures here?
