Can M-N be Topped off with a 6th Round?
« on: October 23, 2011, 07:14:00 PM »
If so, what's the right way to do it? Haven't taken the cosmo off of mine yet, may have to be moving soon. But was thinking about the question.

Seems to me the MN might not be like a Mauser with total positive control over the shell at all times? Can a round fall out if you try to operate it, say, upside down?

I think the mosin could be topped off if you opened the floorplate and added a round but this causes binding that you would not want.  I tried this same thing a long time ago.  if you loaded the mag with five rounds and tried to push the top round down into the mag while closing the bolt on an empty chamber you would see what i mean.
As far as loading upside down the mosin is more of a push-feed and i think the round would simply fall out onto the ground.  The mauser has the advantage of controlled-feed and the round would stay in the action upside down.  But you can feed a round directly into the chamber with the mosin but not with a mauser.  I hope this helps.

topping off Combat arms

After owning a few Milsurp arms I can say 'most' european arms when charged useing a stripper clip you will be darn lucky to squeeze the charged rounds down enuff to close the bolt over what you just loaded, in otherwords these arms were ment to be carried empty till combat was encounterd, load the charg of ammo in the mag and slamb one home and commence battling.
The 1891 Italian Carcano is one you had to strip off the sixth round so you could relieve the mag tension enuff to close the bolt over the remaining five.
All the Mosin's includeing the Chi-Com Type 53 were that way, and the 1891 Argentine.

The SKS one can squeeze the 10th round down enuf to close the bolt on a empty chamber, some you can even squeeze a 11th round in there but its hard on mag.
