Shepherd scopes?
« on: September 20, 2011, 05:53:31 AM »
I bought a rifle with one of these scopes on it, later sold the rifle, ended up getting the scope for about 50$.  It's in excellent condition as far as I can tell, and it shot well enough on the 300 WSM I had it on, although I never really sat down with it to group it in.

I'm putting together a hunting rifle using an Encore as the platform, chambered in 270 weatherby mag.  I had planned on using this scope, but after doing some research there is a lot of bad press out there for it.  I emailed the company asking about repairs(just in case), and apparently it's an older model and they can no longer repair it.

There's a LOT of good stuff out there too, but for every good thing, I find one or two bad things.

Should I wait and see or should I start looking for another scope?  I sorta picked the caliber for the scope, should have done my research. There's still time, I could still switch it out for the flatter shooting 257 weatherby!

Ive personaly never even seen one but have heard there good scopes. My take on them and scopes like them with differnt ways to shoot long range is most of it isnt needed. Its no big deal to shoot your rifle out to 500 yards and see exactly where bullets are hitting at differnt ranges and using a bit of holdover. Ive got a couple luepolds and nikons with ranging reticles and to be honest never use them.

I'm on the same boat you are.  I can't see myself using the special features of the scope that much.  I just hope it's a quality optic that'll hold a solid zero, and if I have to make a shot at distance the scopes features will be there to assist me.

It's just that with this hunting rifle build I completely neglected to factor in quality optics.  So when I found this scope in the back of my safe last week my budget(and wife) were very happy.  Glad to hear it's you've heard good things though.  Hopefully it won't let me down

The only consistent complaint I've heard is that customer service is a nightmare. Never owned or even seen one, but I was looking into it several years ago, and most of the reviews made that point. Hope this helps, Michiman.

Have known some who have tried them (one of them is a close friend) and none of them are still using them.  They all would tell you they are absolute junk (quickly stopped holding zero) and the company either wasn't able or unwilling to fix them.  They started out pretty good for the initial sight-in but during their elk hunt they sh1t-the-bed.  My friend finally just tossed his into a junk pile in his barn and never looked back.

I have had one on a 22 for 20 years or so. It broke about 2 years ago. Well it lost zero at any rate and the turret would not bring it back into zero. The company said they would not warranty their product. I sent a few more polite nasty grams for documentation. Then sent the correspondence to the BBB. They didn't even let it go a day. I was contacted by Sheapard and a new model was sent out that day.

They are clear, bright scopes. My old one would run with a current model vx-2. The new one they sent looks better than a vx-3 to my eyes.
If it fails maybe try what I did. If no joy toss it in the can and go about your business. $50 aint' to bad for that quality of glass. Today I would not buy a new one from them. But if I found one cheap I wouldn't hesitate to get it. If you don't trust it I'd be willing to buy you out of your investment price+ shipping.  :D
Good day
