Reloading the 7.62x39 for the sks
« on: October 11, 2011, 08:47:46 PM »
Recently got an sks, thinking of using it for pig hunting here in texas. Anyone have a pet load that they like for it? Anyone try any heavy loads? I saw a company offer 220gr loads for the 7.62x39

thanks

I shoot two 150 gr. loads in my two SKS rifles I like the Prvi Partizan .311 150 gr. BTSP and Speer HotCor .311 150 gr. SP.  I use CCI #34 LR or Wolf LRM primer both primers have hard cups and are less sensitive to the firing pin strike of free floating firing pins.  I use 24.0 grs. of Reloader #7 with these bullets, the Lee manuals list 24.8 with 150 gr. bullets.  Both loads will shoot 1" or under groups at 50 yds.

You need to get a firing pin kit from Murray's. It prevents slam-fire

Thanks for the info,I've know about the spring load firing pin ever since Murray invented it.  I just made the decision to go in a different direction and leave my rifles as is.

I started reloading for my SKS rifles long before Murray's pin was available and Mi-Spec primer were cheap and readily available and I have more than enough of those and other components to last me as long as I'll be shooting as well as several cases of surplus ammo stashed away for a rainy day.
