Anyone shooting rifled slugs in a rifled barrel?
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:07:52 AM »
Anyone shooting rifled slugs in their Trackers, USHs etc?  I've heard a lot of information saying that its ok, and saying that it isn't.  Just curious if anyone here has had some real life expeience with handis.

mattri,

I haven't tried Foster style slugs in an H&R rifled barrel but I have shot them in Hastings aftermarket slug barrels and a Mossberg rifled slug barrels.  Both guns are 12 ga and the slugs where Remington Sluggers both 2.75 and 3".  I could hit a pie plate @ 50 yards but that was about it.  I didn't have any barrel leading to speak of, just not accurate enough to want to hunt deer with them.

If you reload I would suggest you try the lyman slugs that go into a shotshell cup.  These work well for me and are cheap compared to commerical saboted slugs.   If you don't reload then Remington Buckhammers work well in most rifled barrels and are about 1/2 the cost of many of the sabots.

Thanks for the reply.  I've picked up a couple of different types of sabot slugs to try and was really just curious as to how the rifled slugs behave in a handi barrel.  I've never hunted with a shotgun before so I'm still getting all the information I can.  Thanks again, Matt.

Had great groups, under 3" @ 50 yards offhand with 3" buckhammers in mossy 20 ga. slug barrel.  ;)

Yep, I have found that 2 3/4" (standard velocity if you can find them) shotgun slugs USUALLY shoot smaller groups than 3" mag shells. And they kill deer just as quck as well....<><....:)

Biggest problems I have found in doing this is.:
1)  The barrels leaded up quick and you ended up basicly shooting a smooth bore.
2)  If I remember correctly, I believe the rifling in a barrel, and the rifling on lead slug,
     twist in opposite directions.

I could be wrong, but that seems to have stuck in my head for some reason.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

I believe you are right about the twist; odd isnt it, that they do that, but for all I know, maybe it actually works better than the 'apparently more logical' twist them the same. I would be inclined to mould smooth sided slugs of a bit harder alloy, but simplified my situation by using a smoothbore sluggun.
I have been tempted by a 20ga.USH last year at our local g-show, but the thought of those high priced slugs has put me off.
