1871-1971 H&R Commemorative Officers Rifle - .45-70
« on: October 12, 2011, 01:01:17 PM »
I have the above mentioned rifle and am wanting to know the value the rifle. It is great condition, no scratches or dings, and I have never shot it. I believe it is sited in to 100 yds. It also has the gold plate with it. Any information is appreciated as long as it's not degrading.

I have plans on taking to the gun show in November. Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to pictures of the gun (not great quality pictures). ------

Thanks. I'm not trying to hide anything. I'm just trying an estimate on what it's worth. I have plans on trading towards a new deer rifle with it.

if it were mine, that would be my deer rifle.  even with trapdoor pressures, it'll take deer, elk and black bear.

The one I used to have I paid $475 for. There was a guy on Gun B at one time who had a pair of the Officers model consecutive ser # opening min bid was like $13,000 IIRC. Don't think he got it. Kurt

Didn't the Officers model have all the brass on it? Or is there another one that is more deluxe?

I have to agree with Bugeye !  A .45-70 will kill any game you want to hunt, even at trap door pressures.  Keep it and hunt with it !   :)

I am not trying to brag, but this gun a collectible in that it's never been shot before. I've read figures were this gun is worth 1500 American dollars in great condition and my rifle is in great condition. Were the rifles you all seen used?

One just sold at our local gun shop for $500 dollars. It was unfired with box and papers. This rifle had been on the shelf for $800 dollars. They continued dropping the price until it sold.  Problem, these rifles will open and eject fired rounds up on being fired. It can be a real shock. Some of these rifles have had the breeches come off. This is due to production change from the original rifles. Some owners replace the breech doors with originals and some use the Pedersolli parts. You can read about this problem on LeverGuns Forum as well as the CASS forum. :)

One of the problems with them being "collectible" is they are still H&R's your gun does have some History being 100yr commemrative but it's not 100yrs old. Lots of folks have found or own as new in the box H&R's thinking they had the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow only to find out they are what they are . I had mine for less than a week when a fellow offered me $250 more than I paid for it and that bought me a new Handi. If you can find the guy to pay what you think it's worth great. Otherwise keep it well oiled and out of sight for your kids grandkids. This is a tough economy to get a great price for a fringe collectible. Kind of like selling something at auction and only having one bidder show up...when you were hoping at least 3 bidders really needed it.Kurt

Biggest problem you're facing is that the pool of collectors of H&R's isn't that big.
I'd suspect most of them may have one in thier collection already.
So to get top dollar in this economy may be setting your sites too high.

I'm at work right now so I can't look it up in the Blue Book, which is what most dealers use for trade value plus thier own experience with different guns selling.

Current (32nd Edition) of "THE BLUE BOOK..." lists a 100%/NIB Officer's Commemorative as worth $1000+ Retail.  Value will drop precipitously if the COMMERORATIVE is in less than NIB condition.
