243 Rimmed
« on: October 10, 2011, 02:22:05 AM »
While cutting the ejector groove in my latest 357 max ultra lite last night , I came up with an idea ! (scary ain't it ;D ).
How about making a rim cut in a 243 Handi Chamber and using 307 Win cases?
Should be easy enough and still be able to use 243 dies and a 307 shell holder. The only real difference that I could think of ,would be to lower the powder charge to compensate for the thicker case walls of the 307 win brass, (like using GI surplus brass)
 Your opinions are most welcome

That 307/356 case could be the foundation for a VERY Handi line of cartridges... ::)

you're not the first one with this idea.  The cartridge you're referring to is the .243 Barrows.

I've had 2 handis', a 30-30 and a .223.  the 30-30 always ejected the empty, the .223 not always.
so I lean toward rimmed cartridges for any break action.

George,
That's a fine idea! You may need to thin the case neck a little after reducing it's diameter. CW is right! I recently had the idea of a 338x307Win. It would be real close to the .338 Marlin Express. Then there's always another rebore project 6.5x307 Win. It would be real close to the .260 Rem. The possibilities are nearly endless with such a grand parent cartridge.

Thanks, Dinny

I suspect that if you got some cases re-sized to this and sent then to 4-D they could/would/maybe already have the properly dimensioned reamer to recut the neck/throat and rim cut so you wouldnt need to neck turn, etc. Of course, then the issue would be dies........LEE does rework some of theirs for a nominal cost. Geesh....it is probably just easier to neck turn.......
