YOUTH MODEL 20GA OR 410 FOR WIFE.

I'm trying to get my wife to do some hunting with me.  I am wanting her to go squirrel hunting.  Something with a little more excitement than waiting on deer.  She is short and a full size gun is just too long for her.  I was thinking about getting her a youth 20 gauge, but am concerned about recoil.  I know a .410 would kick softer, but it is easy to miss with.  What do you guys think?

I am 6'2"  and 245 and I squirrel hunt with a model 490 topper junior youth 20 ga that I inherited from my late father in law, my wife is 5'4" and she has no issues with the recoil on this gun when she uses it, .410s have less kick but the shells for them are stupid expensive imho, I think she would be able to take the 20ga especially in hunting situations, she will not be shooting a hundred rounds to tire her out plus she will have the adrenaline kickin so she wont notice it as much.

I'm going to look for one in the next couple of days.  She definately needs a youth model.  I let her hold a few of my guns and she had to reach way too far for the forend.

There is also a 28ga. I have one and the wife loves to shoot it.

I agree the 28 gauge would probably be the ideal combination of low recoil/effectiveness.  The disadvantages are mainly the ammo is not cheap and you won't find it stocked a lot of places.
 
I would go with the .410.  For squirrel hunting most shots will be aimed so it's more like shooting a rifle than wingshooting.  In this situation she will notice the recoil more than if she were shooting at a flying bird - and the youth model 20 gauge could be intimidating to someone who is recoil sensitive.  The last thing you want to happen is for her not to have fun shooting.  A miss once in a while isn't near as likely to discourage her as a bruised shoulder or sore cheekbone!
 
I don't see the price of the ammo as an issue.  How many rounds do you usually shoot in a day of squirrel hunting???  Sure, they're about twice as expensive as 20 ga promo loads, but it's still cheap fun.

PLEASE if you buy a 20, get one with a recoil pad on it, I think the 20gauge handi with a plastic buttplate is a kicking mule.
 
If squirrels are the only thing to start, I say buy a 410 even if the ammo is higher.

The walmart in my area carries 28ga ammo IIRC it was $9.95 a box. I would go with the 28ga unless she plans on eventually deer hunting. Then I'd go with a 20ga.

  I got my 10 year old boy a youth 20ga and some #8 shot light target loads to start out. When he was okay with that I switched to high-brass #6 and he didn't notice. When I told him about it he was happy to be shooting the "hunting" load. You could also use a cheap slip-on recoil pad if she can fit with the extra pull length.
  My 110lb wife prefers to shoot my Winchester 1300 12ga pump. She says the 20ga single shot kicks too much.

I had the same choice when I bought a Rossi for my grandkids to shoot. Since I was already loading for the 20 I went with the 20. I wish I had bought the 410. It kicks like a mule. I suppose I can make some superlight loads for the 20 and we'll get by with it.

I know some light 20's kick as hard as a 12.  I have an over and under that does.  If I go with a 20 it will have a recoil pad.  I may go with the .410.  I have an old rusty one out in the shed that could be cleaned up.  It was a flood victim.  It's even a youth model.

I've been looking at some recoil tables.  It appears light loads in 20 gauges still put out 16lbs of felt recoil.  I think I'm going to break her in on a .410 and see how she does first.  Later she can step up to a bigger gun if she wants.

Good choice!

I started my girlfriend off shooting with a Pardner 28 gauge thinking the recoil would be fine for her. I was wrong, after a few shots I noticed that she started flinching so I had her stop. I bought her a .410 instead and she has no trouble shooting it at all.

Good choice on the 410! I think the twenty in a single shot is harsh for a starter.

Now seriously, if you're hunting squirrel and rabbit, the .410  should do well. If you are also after flying birds, I'd rethink the 20ga--woodsrunner

I bought my daughter a 410 for self defense last year.  I tried her with a 20, but she literally dropped the gun on the ground and would not touch it after one shot. 
 
I bought a 410, and some short bird shot, and finally got her to shoot it.  Then I made her cycle three boxes  through it at 15'.  Then I reloaded it with 3 1/2 self defense rounds.  She has not shot one of these yet, and hopefully won't have to.
 
It really depends on your wife.  My eldest daughter, (same size as the younger), will shoot anything I will and never flinch.

I just bought my 12 year old granddaughter a NEF pump 20ga youth model. 21" barrel, good recoil pad $158 plus tax on sale at Dick's Sporting Goods. Of course I had to test it for function. It's a little rough compared to a 870 Wingmaster but after fireing, it is smoothing out. It shot to point of aim and the modified choke at 25 yards was tight enought for squirrels. I'm a bit of a gun snob, but I must say I like this shotgun. It's solid reciver gives it enough weight and the good recoil pad makes the felt recoil no problem. Plus 20ga. shells are a better deal. Hope this review helps, I really like to hear of more women joining us firearm folks.

So much depends on the loads you choose for a 20, especially stay away from the 3"!
My squirrel loads are something like 7/8oz of #6 in a 2 3/4" shell, and dandy in the H&R or either of my under 6# doubles (a SxS and an O/U).
I agree that the gun should have a recoil pad though, you just cant count on always wearing a heavily padded hunting coat.

I've made a decision to use the .410 with 2 1/2" shells just to start her out.  I have a feeling something with too much kick will just turn her off.

I'm amazed that after all this time, H&R doesn't produce a .410 barrel with a choke other than full.

I  have always been told a modified choke .410 spreads out too fast to be effective except at very close ranges.
