Title says it all- what factory loads are useful for self defense in a  H&R 732 2-1/2"? Or is it a case of load your own?

I suspect the offerings are pretty slim if any, not to mention the caliber is on the low end of SD.

Good Luck !

P.S. - Remember, a .32 in the pocket beats a .45 at home in the drawer every time !

If you hand load it you can make it a formidable SD gun. Certainly not a 357mag but not that far off a 327 .38 with handloads. Kurt

Most of the powder manufactuers have load data on thier website and then there some online sites also.

I think there might be a couple loads on this website. http://www.reloadammo.com/

Also this site is free for about a week: http://www.LoadData.com

MagSafe (prefragmented SD ammo) used to make rounds for the .32 S&W Long - I found several packs of 8 at a gun show several years ago.  I'm aware of tests that show that these ultralight, high velocity rounds do not provide the "FBI STANDARD" for penetration, but they do provide a very nasty, messy shallow (around 6" deep) wound if directed to soft tissues.  There may still be some out there in cyberland.  When I was routinely using one of my 732s as a "car gun", I loaded it with those rounds.

I don't claim any expertise in this area but I did some research for a friend who is fond of her Colt Police Positive which is chambered for 32 S&W Long.  I found an article that seems to give fairly well-reasoned choices for each caliber.  I can't attest to the validity of this information, I only pass it along as what seemed to be one of the more thorough treatments I found on the subject.

Here is what it said:

**
.32 Smith & Wesson Long
The best defense load for this obsolescent revolver caliber is the Federal 98 gr. lead wadcutter (32LA).  Shoot carefully.
