Need loads for GmX 270 win ,wsm 7mm mag,wsm
« on: July 29, 2011, 09:15:51 AM »
I need some accurate loads for these cartridges for this bullet. I am already using the same weights in the Interbond bullet and have worked loads up for them. However my accuracy loads in the 270 wsm and 7 mag are above the hornady manual with no pressure signs and I have used these loads for many years with good results. I was a little worried about this with the monolithichs I have to use copper monolithics where I am going to hunt this year and am pressed for time. Thanks for any information on this.

According to Hornady's website they are compatible with standard load data.  I suspect that being all of gilding metal they are going to act like the Barnes all copper bullets in that some of the heavy for caliber ones will maybe need a little more twist than a comparable lead core bullet.

Thanks for the reply. I have already worked up loads for the interbond bullets of the same weight. However, my loads are above the hornady loads with no pressure probems. I was wondering if I could use these loads and start with dropping the powder about two grains without any problems?

I am in the process of of re-creating a federal load for my 7MM WSM using a barnes 160 grain. I have found that I can get the same velocity using 5% less power than the max reccomended. I used to be into getting more velocity and I really dont care now. I took an antelope at about 350 yards last thursday with this load and it worked great. Even at lower velocities it seemed to open up. In all honesty its a far more powerful load than is neede for antelope, but I am to the point that I just want to shoot one round from each of my rifles and not worry about changing the POI.

My 7MM WSM is finicky, hows yours?

my 7mm WSM is VERY finicky...

the only factory ammo I have found that it really likes is winchester powermax bonded 160gr... everything else does OK.. but nothing else does what I would define as good..

I have been considering hand loading for it.. if for no other reason to help bring the cost down.. but havent found alot of people out there loading for this round yet.. if you guys work up some pet loads that work well in your rifles.. I would love to hear what works!

(my 7mm WSM is a winchester M70 ultimate shadow)

I have the model 70 black shadow and I put a ziess conquest on top of it. Loads it doesnt like are:
Win Power point 150's
hornady 139 SST's
hornady 139 soft points

Loads it does like are:
Factory loaded federal 150 soft points (33 a box)
factory loaded federal barnes 160's
hand loaded nosler partition 175's
hand loaded speer grand slam 145's
hand loaded nosler accubond 160's

It will shoot a myriad of rounds, but handloading is a must. I like the round and rifle but if I had it to do over again, I would just get a regular rem 7mm mag. I used ot have one and it did chrony 100-200 FPS slower than the WSM, but I wouldnt want to live on the difference. My problem is that I have a bunch of other medium/small caliber rifles that come really close to the 7mm flavor. EJ

I have found my 7MM WSM is difficult. However, I have found that Rl 19 has been the best overall powder for velocity and accuracy in this caliber. Ihave tried all of the other powders I have worked up the loads for the GMX and found that they are the most accurate and .5 gr  below the same wt interbond load is the load for my Model 70. Both these loads are at one half inch while everything else has been at best an inch or more. CCI has been the best primer for me. I had the best results in seating the GMX bullets out to .30 to .35 out from the rifling for  best accuracy. They did not do well against the rifling and pressure built. However, it grouped very well and pressure dropped as I backed the bullet out of the rifling to the seating depths mentioned previously. Hope this helps.

The same results happened with the 270 WSM Except RL 22 was the powder of choice here.

I have used MAGPRO and H4350 nd havent noticed a dimes worth of difference between the two. Your totally right about the seating depth and accuracy. You dont want to have them touching the lands at all. But, no matter what round I put in the rifle, it craters primers. Factory loads, hand loads, on the lands, backed off the lands, it just craters primers. And, it blows the brass out to the point that in two uses,  closing the bolt on a round that has been loaded three times is difficult. Its plenty accurate with my current loads but in my opinion, way too much of a hassle when compared to my 30-06, 243, 270, 45-70 ETC. I can re-load for all of those with far less time and hassle. I'm to the point where I just use my 270 and never notice a difference between it and the 7MM WSM.

ejpaul1 I have found that in the 7mmWSM 68 gr of RL19 and CCi mag primers  and WW brass are giving great results with backing out of rifling 30 to 35 thousants resulted in no pressure problems The Cartridges in GMX just fit with enough length to clear the magazines well in the rifles and ensure good feeding. This load is the only load that worked and resulted in three quarter to one half inch groups and 3300 fps velocity in my model 70 rifle. I had the same problems with pressure and lack of accuracy using 4350 H and imr, 4831 both H and imr, retumbo, and etc. the only powder that came as close as the Rl19 was Rl22 but it resulted in less velocity and not quiet as good accuracy. The RL 19 has been very stable in temp from 95 to 9 degrees using the GMX and Interbond bullets of the same weight. However .5 gr more RL19 in the interbond has been very accurate also. Please, be sure to use the normal caution in these loads when reloading reduce 10% and work up one half grain increments. I was almost in the same frame of mind as you on the 7mm WSM. I could not get good accuracy with anything factory  and only fair accuracy with reloads until I discovered this combination. This load has worked the same in three of my friends rifles in 7mmWSM. So far it has resulted in 2 Nilgai one at 250 yards and one at 375 yards and two axis deer at long range all were one shot kills with the GMX bullets in this caliber. I hope this helps you.

I appreciate the advice, I might grab a pound of that stuff soon. I like the cartridge for a shorter rifle (less weight easier to tote around) and for the short bolt throw as well. The reason I keep using it for deer size game instead of my 270 is that it is the only rifle I have that has a Zeiss scope on it. I built the 270 for beating around so it just has one of those new redfields on it. Anyway, the round is simply devistating and I do prerfer the 7MM bullet diameter for game of all sizes.

I took a doe pronghorn with it about a week ago using the barnes 160 grain flavor. A touch over 300 yards, which is a bit out of my comfort zone, and it snapped her backbone in 2. A bit high, but a good clean kill nonetheless. Hard to get rid of a rifle that you've dropped truckloads of game with, even if it is finicky.

I like H4350/H4831 in all these short mags ( and some long ones too) I had a problem with R19 in a .338 winmag, years ago. I liked R19 in a .240 Weatherby/90X, so tried it in the 338/185XLC. I had a good load...in 70-80 deg. weather. In late December, (10 deg) 5 days before my cow elk hunt, I checked my zero. I was all over the target. I pulled the rounds, the powder had to be scraped out, it was a solid cake. I went to H4350, got back on track, and shot my cow around 250yds like clockwork. Since then, I only use temperature stable powders ( mostly Hogdon Extreme type) especially in cases bigger than '06 capacity. I also don't care for any powder that makes a solid lump with compressed loads, I feel it makes ignition inconsistent. I just found a great load in a 7mm RUM with Retumbo, not sure if you can get enough in the 7mm WSM to be worthwhile. Good luck to you. BTW, this 7mm RUM is finicky too, just like my 7mm.08, and 7x57, and a former .280 Ackley....and so on. It's just the nature of the beast I think.

I disagree that the 7 M/M bore is difficult to load for.
Some of the most accurate Rifles I have owned were 7/57, 7M/M08 and 7 Mags.   No problems developing loads that group into 1/2 inch or less at 100 yards for any of these.   One difference I only used custom rifles, not factory guns so the issues of bedding problems, heavy triggers, or less than optimum factory barrels did not come into play.
All of the new short mags  7M/M WSM, and 7M/M RUM are over bore, and just a new fad and not better than the 7M/M Remington Mag over all.   The short fat cases are also harder to load for from several standpoints.

7 Mag 4350 Powder 154 Grain Hornady .402 inch group,   Shaw barrel, Savage 110 action

All mine have been "finicky", not difficult. I never had a problem finding a load, it just seemed to be the luck of the draw for me. All my rifles (except this old Mod '93 Mauser) have been tricked out, and the 7mm RUM is a custom Mod 721, converted to 7 RUM, w/Shilen barrel. However, they all seem to like one weight over another. I have shot alot of game with 7mm's, great caliber. In South Africa, the only problems most Americans had with the 7 Rem mag was using too soft (deer bullets) instead of a good tough bullet. Other than that, I always found the 7mms to be much easier to shoot well than the big 300's or 340/338 RUM. My 7mm RUM was a gift, or I would never had bought one. I played with a couple of 7mm STW's a few years ago, and while "OK", I never could see enough difference between them and the 7 Rem mag. I cut my wildcat teeth on the 257 Roberts Improved, and then a .280 Ackley Improved. I made the mistake of reaming out a Rem.Mountain rifle (22"bbl) and only gained a little in velocity. I would like to some day have a long barreled 280 Ackley Imporved.

I have had no problems loading any of the standard 7mm cartridges and have found them to be very easy to load and easy to obtain an accurate load. I have also found that the 7mmWSM is no or very little difference in power than the 7mm rem mag but is in a short action. However, I have used the 7WSM  with the load I listed 3 times in Canada for Moose  and deer at extreme temps with no problems. This load is not a compressed load and has done very well with RL19 at a variety of temps. I cannot speak for any of the other WSM except the 7MM and 270 WSM cartridges. If I can remember correctly the 7MM WSM has set the new record for 1000 yards using the 180 gr VLT bullet and RL25. However, the 7MM Mag has been a super contender for this in the past also. Hope this helps.

Same here I like mine also since I got it worked up. It is good to have variety and different selections for different people. Thanks for the reply and hope you have a great year and enjoy it.
