Ugggh! Case-head separation.

Are there any tricks to getting the leftover case out of the chamber after a case-head separation?

Aside from preventing it in the first place. :oops:  :oops:

A bronze cleaning brush slightly larger in dia. than the i.d. of the case itself (not just the neck) can be inserted and when pulled straight back will remove the remainder of the offending case.  Hope this helps you as much as it has me.

I had one in my 300 win Mag, the bronze brush didn't get it out so tried pouring cerra safe in (like for a chamber cast) and tapping it out....still no good. There is a special tool made to get them out.  Try the other methods first and see if you can get it out.

Ok, tried the bronze brush idea.  No luck, the case remains embedded in the chamber. :cry:

I even tried an oversized brush.

Then I slugged the bore with a bullet.  Hammered it all the way through the barrel.  Just went right through the case.  I was hoping maybe it would pick up the edge of the case mouth.  Nope.

What are the names of these tools?

something about freezing the barrel. Then the brass and the barrel being different metals, heat and cool diffrently. I'm going from memory but thought they then used a brush and it popped right out. sounds good, anythings worth a try.

I tried everything, brush, tap (that one scared me so I gave it a half  hearted try).  My seperation was with a 8mm.  How I ended up getting it out was I put a very small amount of expoxy cement on the shoulder of a 30/30 case.  I tapped it up into the 8mm and let it set then drove it out.  I basically made a plug.  I share this not so much to copy but to see the lenghts one will go to to get the @#$% out.  I could have put the gun aside and onrdered the proper tool but did not.  Just had to get it out.  It worked.  JB

Brownells carries case head separation case removal tool from Echo for most calibers. I have them in all my calibers and luckily only had to use it once. That wa when I called them to remove case from an Encore that failed only after one reload. Bad brass was culprit on that time. Simply insert the tool into the chamber like a standard round and two prongs extend through case and grip it at mouth. Extract case with bolt or in case of Encore with extractor like normal case and it pulls out slicker than snot. I've used it several times for shooters at local range when their day went into crapper. Couldn't believe how easy their cases came out with this tool. Cost is about $18 which is pretty cheap tool to have around. Case head separation can be from bad brass as easy from sizing error or even over use of brass so it is good to have around.

To do as  Old Syko indicated,  put a cleaning rod through the barrel from the front with no brush. With the tip of the cleaning rod starting in to the action, thread on a .35 caliber brush.  Pull the brush back into the case, then reverse it.  By doing it this way, the brush will grip the inside of the case very tightly.
