Win model 70 extreme weather ss
« on: October 10, 2011, 01:24:11 PM »
I plan on making this my next gun purchase, in .270 WSM.  I was hoping for some feedback on this gun, good or bad.  I currently have a super grade that I bought used in 2001 or so that I love but I want something that I don't have to be quite as careful with.  I've handled the gun a few times at different gun shops and really like what I see.  My current hunting situation doesn't let me shoot past 150 yards, but I do plan on keeping this gun for the rest of my life.

Also, I do not reload, so do I need to be concerned about this caliber being phased out anytime soon?

And lastly, what would be a good bullet choice for shots under 150 yards?  I was thinking about trying the Accubond CTs but would be open to suggestions from Federal as well.

Thanks for the help!

I love the model 70 I have 2 one in 223 fw. one in 30-06 sporter neither is stainless though I just don't like the kevlar stocks look. I usually avoid calibers that are the latest and greatest mostly the short mags from what I've seen all are slowly fizzeling except the 300 wsm. It seems to have a cult following. I admit I've never tried any of them so my opinion may not be what your looking for of the 270 wsm but I do like the 270 winchester alot and currently own one in rem 700 bdl, this rifle likes the 150 gr bullets  does a nice job on whit tail deer. You didn't really say what you hunt but if it weighs over 300 lbs you might want to buy premium ammo with a nosler partician, swift or barns tsx type bullets, If you don't need the premium shells I would buy the plane winchester power point in 150 gr.

If you are truly concerned about ammo but want the WSM simply have someone order you something like 200 rounds when they order the rifle. I don't know about you but that will last about forever in my hunting career. Save the brass and one day have them topped of with fresh if needed.

It will be some time before the 270wsm is orphaned. Get yourself a .325wsm and go looking for that stuff, you'll soon realise 270wsm is flat everywhere. ;)  Feeding that pig nudged me to a rock chucker purchase.
