"the one I bought in the 80s was the last one I have seen in a gunstore.  I kick myself for getting rid of mine.."

Well, that doesn't sound encouraging!!!...
there's a website somewhere of savage 24 owners where you could probably find one.  google might lead you to it.

Looked at and handled 3 drillings before I purchased.  2 of them were 12g with american style stocks and the other was 16g with a finer euro style stock.  The 12g guns were large cumbersome guns for me.  I purchased the 16g/7x57r and have no regrets in not going for a 12g.
16g ammo is not redily available in Australia, but I have been able to purchase enough factory hulls to reload although it looks like I will have to bring in the wads from the US.
And yes, I use it as my "meat getter" hunting gun,  not volume/ferral animal control gun.
Most of the game I'm after here in OZ is much lighter framed than I see in NA, with the 30-06 and 30cal magnums usually being carried by the Wayne Carrs of the area!

I'm going to cast my vote for the 30/30 over 20ga.....because.....I just bought one today, a 24V series D..seems in very good shape. This is my first combo gun and I'm pretty excited ...

I have had some cracked wood repaired and it is hard to tell that the stock was cracked.

I recently bought a 24V .357/20 in superb shape with identical checkered stocks as da tirty tirty above, except the forend is checkered too.  A friend is reaming it to .357 Maximum, cutting it to 18.5 inches and threading for chokes.  I should have it back in a week or so.  To me, it should be the perfect carry and truck gun for Upper Michigan.  Three inch 20 ga. plus .38 Special, .357 Magnum, 360 DW and .357 Maximum.  How versatile can you get?

Guess this sort of might be the thread to ask the question.  I'll try it here first and then maybe go to a different forum:

Who still makes a 222/12 or a 223/12 or something similar?...

I want the 22 caliber for sure and would prefer the 12 gauge rather than a 16 or 20 gauge...

I have a friend that has the 222/20 gauge and the 222 is an M.O.A. shooter with Vmax bullets...

Any help?...

Thanks...BCB

Pete - I think you have my dream 24.

Not as versatile (but pretty good for me since I don't often hunt larger than rabbit or quail anymore) is the 22lr over 410 I bought a few months ago...

As with pastorp I've probably done all the travelling around the US to hunt that I'll probably do.  I will be 60 in a week or so and am in good health, I have just done all I want at the moment..but that could change before the day is out...hehehe.  99% of my hunting takes place on our property, consequently I'm not as bound to what might be available in a store as I may have been at one time.  However, I have no memory of that ever being a consideration.  I'll mention three because I have all three and for my purposes any of them is more than adequate.  My problem is always choosing whether or not I want to shoot smokeless or black powder.  Black powder almost always wins out.  My first bought is an Imman. Meffert drilling from 1936 and is in 16 X 16 over 7 X 57R.  I can't imagine a person needing anything more in the lower 48.   My second is another drilling, a Thieme und Schlegelmilch in 16 X 16 over 9.3 X 75R Nimrod.  Although it is proofed for smokeless I shoot black in it and it usually gets the nod between the drillings.  For both drillings I have an einstecklauf in 22LR so that makes them even more "all around"...if such a thing exists.  22LR being one of my few concessions to smokeless powder.  The third is a combination gun and is not proofed for smokeless and is in 16 X 10.5 X 47R.  The T&S and the combo gun are used the most, the Meffert I simply enjoy owning for the most part....I do not recall the last time the rifle was fired.
I have yet to see a 12 bore drilling I want to carry all day long.  I grew up on 16 bores and they always did the job with a lot less weight, fuss and muss.  Still, the 12 bore is like the 30-06, neither are EVER wrong and for those who do not reload both are available just about anywhere.  I reload, cast all my bullets and have more than ample experience with case forming so the odd and obscure cartridges are no problem and in fact I prefer them.  All smoothbore chambers, except the Meffert, are still 2 1/2 and I use MagTech brass hulls loaded with black.
