Waiting to set traps!
« on: October 16, 2011, 05:06:41 AM »
I  wait till first of November to set traps here in north central Wi.  Granted  for water you can get froze out BUT too many  blue mink and  short haired rats.  Canine are okay, only they dont have the long haired ruffs ect.  When the canines get that nice long haired ruff  (neck hair) the heavy wooly underfur comes quickly and lots of fur buyers give less as fur industry finds them harder to work with .   Nothing like pulling a mink and seeing that big bottle brush tail signifying  a prime mink versus the early pencil thin hair on early mink.    Just reflecting

I start the 29th of october this year. Even though our coon season opens earlier, I wait till water opener. Then set for rats, beaver, coon ,mink and otter.
Been lucky all thse years--our fur is in pretty good shape for our opener.

If we want to trap in open water, we have to set on opening day.Even then we may have some ice.
Open water trapping is a short thing here.

Yeppers on the ice thing.  One year  when living  east of Hayward in the  Spider Lake township i set traps on saturday and Sunday i was chopping them out of ice and by Monday i was walking on ice.  Never did thaw out.... it was hard ice trapping  unless you found a warm spring or fast water....

I put some coon traps out today so I guess we'll see how long they stay out. I didn't see much sign and I ended up spead pretty far out for the amount of traps I got out. First part of the line isn't so bad but then the gap gets pretty wide. So first part of the line may last longer than the second half.  Did find out from one land owner today he has beavers I din't know about. Their close enough I can go there and catch a few rats and try to take out the beavers for him too. I think I'm going to wait till after dear season to do that.

We can't set until November 5th. Good thing that waterfowl had opened up last Saturday here in Illinois! I had two fresh wood ducks for dinner last night after I got off of the water. Yummmy!!!
