Winchester Model 92
« on: October 15, 2011, 05:20:55 PM »
A family friend has a Winchester Model 92 in 38 WCF (.38-40 cal). It's all original, with a long octagon barrel and crecent butt stock. Very nice and shiney bore. All metal is gray patina. No cracks in the wood. Any thoughts as to its value would be much appreciated.

Also has a Colt 1887 Lightening slide action in .32-20 caliber. Same condition as the Winchester. Value?

Date of manufacture, features, and condition will contribute to a valuation.

That said, it is worth at least a thousand dollars and up to maybe $2500 if in very good shape with minimal bluing left.  Serial number range, for date of manufacture, would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. Serial number is 902XXX. No special features, just an honest, clean rifle. I'll take a stab on the percentage of finish left. My guess is 45 - 50%, mostly on the barrel as one would expect. Original factory sights, fore and aft.. Only distinguishing feature is a set of notches cut along the entire length of the comb. My guess is the original owner counted his hunting kills.

Made in 1919, it's later manufacture date will not help your value.

Photos would help but I'll stick to around a thousand bucks to an enthusiastic buyer.

For a handloader that rifle can be a lot of fun.  I have the same configuration in a 1897 manufacture date that I have fired over ten thousand times.  Incredibly smooth action, never hangs up, misfires or hang fires.

I've shot blackpowder with it, that's cool.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the input. I have an older Rossi '92 carbine in .45 Colt that I've shot for several years in the cowboy action sport. Exclusively with genuine black powder loads. As you say, it's lots of fun.
