999 Sportsman
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:02:36 AM »
I got my first 999 sportsman at an auction this week. It is very clean and looks like it was not shot very much, no rust or pitting and very shiny bore. Serial # dates it to 1969.  $225 plus fees. I hope it shoots as good as it looks.

Bought a new one in 1977.  Nice little revolver but the trigger pull is so terribly hard I am unable to shoot it well at all.  Mine looks new
yet due to not being able to shoot it accurately.  Only accurate handguns interest me like my Ruger Security Six, S&W 19-4, my Ruger
Super Blackhawk and my 1945 era government model 1911A1.

I was able to get to the range today and shoot the 999. Only shot 3 cylinders full. I only gave it quick cleaning and it seemed to cycle a bit sluggish. It now is cleaned well and did have a bit of old oil gumming things up. Still, it shot well, handles very well, and I only wish my eyes were 30 years younger. Now that it has been cleaned more thoroughly, the clyinder moves much more freely and locks up tightly. It doesn't have the quality of the Dan Wesson 22, I recently traded, but it feels much better in hand. Do these revolvers need to be "broken in", as this one does not appear to have been used very much at all? Here are a few pics.

Old Fart,
I don't know!
All I know is that they are Jay Scott grips, same as the fake pearl.
I was kind of hoping someone here would know what they are made of, different for sure!
Here's a pic of my 4 1980 Sportsman, all wearing Jay Scott pearl like grips.

Tiger Wood.  Very nice Jim.
Don't judge ALL SPORTSMAN revolvers based upon one example.  Several of my SPORTSMAN revolvers have what I would consider, match grade lock work.

Thanks Jim,
I do still like the bling look of the pearls on the 4" models
I think I will put the tiger wood grips on the chrome, and blue 1955 models, and see what they look like on those.
I'll post some pics.

I don't have the experience with many different models to  tell a "terrible" trigger pull.
All I know is that I am happy with the accuracy of all my Sportsman pieces.
If yours is like new, and you aren't happy with it, sell it to me. ;D

Those are the only 4 inch sportsman H&R's I have ever seen. My wife shoots a 6 inch sportsman--shoots very good--at least after I made new grips for her. The orginals were a bit too fat for her hands.
